Grazing Muzzles - Recommendations Please?

As title really, fatty mare needs a grazing muzzle as she refuses to be strip grazed!
I need one that it pretty sturdy, as I'm sure she will do all she can to get it off! But its in her own interest that it stays on! Any recommendations from fellow fat horse owners :D

me and two friends moved yards last year to an ex-dairy farm - with the most fantastic grazing youve ever seen. so we decided to use muzzles, we have a range of different horses from 14hh connemaras to 16hh andalucians between us. we have all used the shires muzzle successfully, it has rubbed some though. the larger horses have done better as it seems to have better padding compared to the small. i dont know how big your horse is, my 15.1hh Cob x and the andalucian have both had the 'large' size and have had few/no rubs, they are also the two that never ever got theirs off (i dont know if thats because they fit better or becuase they are the two most sensible horses of our pack - most of the time!). If you do decided to get one - get the pink - it may look very 'barbie' but if it does come off you'll find it so much easier!!

I've used the Greenguard grazing muzzle and it was effective at staying on and moderating the grass intake. It did however rub my boy's chin to start off with.
 
I put the bucket type ones on mine. Not sure what brand, but you know the ones I mean ;) They've been fine, but I put them in the size up from what they would normally wear which stops them rubbing, which they did before I changed them :) also put gaffa tape over the velcro behind the ears to stop them taking them off!
 
Greengaurd ones (with the headcollar). they stay on and last.

I've found the bucket ones can rub and I don't like the fact most of them only have one hole.... really designed to stop a horse eating entirely and just letting them drink.
 
last year I used a shires muzzle, but had to tie it on to a normal headcollar, or it'd be off in seconds :rolleyes: The hard bucket type I tried on him, but there was no way he was going to have to suffer that......

I have just been to a table top sale, where I got a greenguard headcollar and fs muzle for £8. I know peeps say these rub, so I'll have a go with it and see how it goes. If it's no good, I'll definitely return to the shires, using the greenguard headcollar (with a break in it) to hold it on.

Doesn't stop my mare eating. I am not sure many things would lol. She doesn't lose weight with one on it just stops her getting any fatter. She wears hers almost 24/7 from spring to winter. She is in the shires one.
I did find that I had to go up a size. The cob size (which is the size of things she usually has) rubbed her. The full size doesn't. It has never come off. Doesn't seem to bother her, she will come to me in the field to have it put on.

I think it depends on the type of horse you have and their nose shape. Looking at this thread anyway.
My andalusian x connie wears a Greenguard which doesn't rub him at all. He originally had a Shires cob size one which rubbed him awfully despite me gluing fabric inside it and smothering him in vaseline. In the end I paid the money and got a decent Greenguard which he is much happier in.
He has quite a small muzzle and mouth and very soft skin.

That reminds me, I need to dig it out. It's going on tomorrow!!! Poor horse!!!
 
the exmoor I had on loan had a shires one, it was good until the grass got too short and then he rubbed his nose with it trying hard to get to the short grass. If anyone would like it they can I just need postage covering, just pm me.

I'm pretty sure my girl will sulk about it!! She's such a piglet!!
 
I have found the westgate (or wetgate I always get it wrong) to be the best for my horse....the bucket is deeper than the shires one - my boy managed to push it off his nose - he cant with the westgate ones but these are not always very easy to get hold of in shops - shires always tends to be the most commonly sold.

Never used the greenguard muzzle but my friend tried one - her section d had it off in less than 5 mins and never kept it on so went to the shires/westgate muzzles and has had much more success....
 
My son's pony has the Shires one, in pink lol.

Don't know if anone else has this problem but the pony managed to get it off every time it went out within seconds even with a headcollar tight over it. Top tip no is plait the the mane and the head piece each side, little B can't get it off now lol
 
I've got a greengaurd muzzle (after going through other ones, all of which were swiftly removed). I've had to pad the chin to stop it rubbing, but he can't get it off and it seams to work OK.
 
I use the green guard grazing muzzle with the head collar, it did rub her chin at first but it doesn't rub any more. I actually put it on today as the grass looks very green :)

I've tried the shire bute she hated it.
