My 13.2hh Newforest X welsh sect B pony is kept out on very rich grass. He has got rather round this summer so i bought a muzzle yesterday too keep the dreaded laminitis away. He's five years old and hasn't worn one before.
I can sence that it will be a problem getting on, and to wear in the feild.
Its nice and padded and costed me a bomb! So hes got to wear it or hes going to beill.
Any suggestions about getting it on nicely at the like.
I was going to bribe him with a carrot in the bottom... he'd like that haha.

Try not to make a big deal out of it. Put it on him, adjust it & then put him out. You will be tempted to stand & watch for ages to see how he gets on with it but don't. Watch for a few minutes & then leave him with it & he'll sort himself out.

As I've said in previous posts the main problem with muzzles is the owners. The horses will get used to them eventually, some just take longer than others. Good Luck.

It took Daisy about 30secs to learn to eat through hers. Alot of the time when they have a muzzle on they will glare at you angrily to try and persuade you to take it off but that doesn't mean they can't eat, just that they are too annoyed to do so.

The first time we put a muzzle on H, he stood there like a little lost soul and looked at us as if to say 'what have I done wrong?'.

Two minutes later he was munching away.

Our two are out on grass 24/7. Someone tampered with H's muzzle last week, which led to him gaining 5 cm's on the weight tape

I measured him yesterday and he's lost 3 of the 5 and was jumping like a good'un. Proof, if any were needed, that muzzles (combined with good exercise) do work.
