Can anyone give me advice please!! We cleared 2 paddocks last year, they were such a mess that they had to be sprayed off, ploughed over, seed bed set and new seed sewn in September 08. The paddocks look good, grass had come through before the winter set in and they are growing on well, as too are some of the weeds! We have big patches of a creeping cleaver (I call it stick buds, the dogs love it!). We have some broad leaf docks and another flat leaf weed that I dont know the name of. The total area is approximately 4 acres and I have not yest put my horse on to it as I havent moved him as yet. The paddocks will need to be rollered as one still has quite fluffy soil. I have bought Grazon 90 and have a local farmer that would spray the paddocks for me, however I have been told that I cant roller or spray on pasture that has been established for less than a year. Can anyone tell me if they have done so and had any problems, or if there is anything that I can do to keep the weeds under control. Many thanks

I have used Grazon 90 to good effect but I tend to spot spray rather than do the whole paddock, if you do this make sure you wear a mask. I used to dead head docks I missed and burn the seed heads.

The data sheet attached to G90 will tell you how long the sward must be established before spraying. You could also ring the manufacturer they usually have technical experts who will help you.

It is a good idea to feed your grass with low nitrogen(for equine grazing) before spraying, this helps the grass to take hold when the weeds die back. If you have clover in your field the Grazon will cause it to go yellow but it will recover.

If you find you cannot spray this year then just feed and ask your farmer to top the paddock, this will tide you over until you can spray.

I am an expert on waging war on docks!!!!

Many thanks rollin I will give the tech experts a call in the morning and thank you for the good advise on the grass feed and topping. I may be able to spot spray the worst bits and then get the feed/topping done at the same time. Do you know if it would still be ok for me to get the farmer to roll the paddocks? The docks are quite big and we have had a few nettles too, I have a feeling I may be joing you in war against weeds!

OH whos an agricultural contractor always drilled in the autumn, spray in the spring, it is an ideal time as you hit the weeds as they are putting all their energy into growing. Spray the field first then roll it once the weeds start to die off. Hope this helps.

Have a look at my post in latest news First Cleveland Bay-by inFrance. The paddock in the video was full of weeds two years ago. It has been spot sprayed topped and rested for the winter for our 'nursery'.

Thanks jrp and your oh, will wait before I get him to roll and I will have a look at your post rollin, its good to know that you have had good results reclaiming the paddock
