Great 'gift' from the Brooke Hospital

I've just received the latest gift catalogue from the Brooke Hospital for Animals and they have a new 'gift' to buy - a painkiller kit (injections of Butrum) for £10 that will help ease the pain and suffering of 40 sick or injured animals while they receive vital treatment. They've got other 'gifts' as well of course, including a 'Happy Harness and Training Pack' for £13.95 which means ill fitting harnesses can be replaced and owners taught how to fit the new tack and keep it clean - avoiding the deep, painful wounds dirty and ill fitting harness causes.

If you haven't got their catalogue already, obviously you can request it from their website and see the rest of the gifts - none of which are very much money compared to what we all spend on our horses and ourselves - I've decided a few horsey friends are getting Brooke gifts this year rather than more tack they don't need!

Will this money actually be used to purchased these items. I am getting a bit worried about the money these charities are holding on to , or spending on personalized number plates! . Is it wrong for me to think like this, yes, but it also wrong for charities to say they will spend the money on animals then just keep it hidden away.
I do still give to some charities including the Brooke especiallly at Xmas but it makes you think.

I know what you mean - I'm a cynic too! You do hear of people, including vets and even celebs, who have been out to the Brooke clinics and are really impressed that they are doing a fantastic job in appalling situations. I know charities have to keep a good cushion of money behind them in case donations dry up (current situation of credit crunch for instance) because they have commitments in staff, buildings, projects etc. But I don't like to see silly wastes of money on head offices and management. I have never heard anything bad about the Brooke.

I think many of the smaller charities do use the majotiry of donations at the sharp end, and the Brooke is one of them. I am thinking of sending a Brooke gift this year instead of HHO xmas cards.

they are a REAL charity..not only helping the animals but family members too.

i did the no christmas card thing too last year..and put the money saved to a mobile vet.

Brooke/ILPH are the only charities i donate to...there are far too many so called "charities" in this country that are half-backed and ill thought out to entrust them with ANY money.

I used to send a small donation once a month to a large horse charity for many years, and then a few years back there was an article in the papers stating that the money was being stolen from certain people who was supposed to be running the charity.

I was furious & stopped my donations, i then got loads of gumph through the post almost bullying me to reinstate my donations. I sent them a letter stating if they continued to badger me i would report them to the police for harrassement (sp) they then eventually left me alone.

Sorry to say i do not donate to animal charities any more
