Oh, hang on... have just checked and apparently it was a 'mistake' and the sharks (you're quite right, it was 2) were in fact harmless basking sharks.
Then again... they would say that, wouldn't they? to stop all the tourists leaving. I've seen JAWS dontcha know!!
On second thoughts perhaps the sightings will attract lots of shark hunters... like in JAWS.
Hi,
Speaking as someone who sees St. Ives bay daily...
Sorry, but no confirmed sightings of a great White down here ever - closest confirmed sighting was in the 1970's in the Bay of Biscay, about 300 miles away. Nothing to stop one swiming up for his hols though.
They get "sighted" here every year - I think possibly it's encouraged a bit to keep the tourists excited when the weather's not so great! (Boat trips out suddenly very popular...)
We do get porbeagles, (sp?) which look very like Great Whites but are harmless, and the basking sharks, which are really impressive and well worth seeing, but also harmless unless you get in the way of one swinging its tail!
to be honest, there's more risk of sharks on the streets of Newquay of an evening...
There was a sighting and photo taken of a shark just floating off the coast of newquay, watching all the people. I was there when it was taken!!! People paniced that it was a great white but twas reported to be a basking shark - was the length of nearly the whole bay
I am happy to belive that if conditions become right they would come here but dont belive we have them now.
Most people have no idear about what lives in our waters let alone be able to tell the difference between sharks from a quick look.
Untill we have a confirmed sighting or one is caught off our coast I wont think it is anything other a mistake.
I thought occassionally giant whites did come near the coast sometimes. I heard of one caught in the North Sea not long ago. I think its perfectly normal and not much to worry about.
