Ok I decided to invest in one - and thought this might be good as they can still graze in it however I got the headcollar to go with it and it looks pretty much like a conventional headcollar with an extra loop attached to it - doesnt say where it goes or what its purpose is (in the pic it seems to loop from poll to behind jaw?) must admit it looks bit dangerous to me PLEASE tell me what to do with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The extra loop fits from the poll down to the nose band. This stops the nose band being pulled down when the muzzle is fitted to it.

Persevere with adjusting the muzzle to get the right fit. It may take several days to get the corrtect fitting with fine adjustments but it is worth it.

I'm going to put mine on e-bay. Bought 2 for the 2 shetlands and the first on got it off within a minute

DON'T USE IT!!! The Greenguard headcollar doesn't have a breakaway point on it can you believe. I even rang up Shires (who import them) to check and it was them who confirmed it). Most people use them with a Fieldsafe headcollar or something else with a breakaway point in it. Not worth the risk using the Greenguard one, take it back and get your money back.

Thanks everyone, spose I should have consulted ye before I bought it!! Oh well, I'll try n rig something up n look for velcrow fastening headcollar.
Must say Iv only just recently discovered this forum and find it BRILLIANT - EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK!!!!!

my friend had a greenguard and it rubbed like hell within a week!!!! try a 'be nice' one, thats what ive got (had actually ive lost it at my previous yard!! :-( ) they are really good!

I use the Shires equivalent o the 'Best Friend' and I also have two others with the same padding bits as the Best Friend ones but a different make again. I do belive the Greenguard ones take a bit of fiddling with, but it's worth persevering. They allow more grass through than the webbing-bucket type, I think. Mine also will break away and my horse snapped all the plastic adjusters in his frenzy to remove it

I simply ordered some replacement 'black, plastic triglides' (as I found they are called) from e-bay (£1.98 for 10 inc postage) and you can't tell he got it off!

The Greenguard muzzle itself has break points as the leather is designed to give. It is if they get tangled up in the proper Greenguard headcollar that you have the problem, as that is what doesn't have a break point in it. Lots of people use the Greenguard one successfully with fieldsafe headcollars, just don't use it with the Greenguard one, it isn't worth the risk IMHO.
