my laminitic horse is now allowed out -phew!
i got him a greenguard muzzle and have under vet instructions been taking it off for about 1/2hr just now and letting him have a bit of grass, our grass is very short and weedy and thin not great pasture but great for horses
i have to build up the length of time he gets the muzzle off gradually
but what i was wondering is
how much grass do the actually manage to get with a muzzle on ie - if he is out for 8hrs per day wearing it for 7hrs what is the equilvent of him being out for x amount of hours with no muzzle
hope that makes sense:confused:

i was at a feed talk and they said that if you could fill a carrier bag of grass using a pair of sissors in under 2hrs you had too much grass for a laminitic - it would take me about 2 weeks to cut that amount the grass is so short!
i have cut his hay back from 13kg to max of 8kg since he is out during the day but i do wonder if he is getting enough food with his muzzle on and being on such short grass

Your lucky ! how long was yours in for???

Mines still in I had the greenguard muzzles . . They are not much good for my welshy A as her face is too small, I went for

my pony kept getting hers off.
what i like is its soft and nostrils are clear.

I will get the large muzzle for my lami 16hh mare

sounds like on your grazing he isnt getting much to eat through it
so:

! hr without it i would guess he just getting around 1/2 to 1 section hay
if its longer than 1- 1/2 sections .
personally i would opt for 1 hr max and maybe substitute with 1 section soaked hay in the day time tied up with haynet .

Grass is beginning to come through so I would be concerned out longer even with poor grazing there is always green food they can eat .
I would say he is better with the muzzle all day
+ 1 section lunch time then muzzle back on you can always give him a healthy ( laminitic friendly ) meal in the am and pm.

Not knowing how bad yours was. ( mine pretty bad ) If / when she is allowed out ( if she pulls through ) I dont think i will let her graze with muzzle off, tho we have v good grass. I prob give her section hay lunch time or lami feed.

thanks
he is also 16hh
he came down with stress lami due to his pal going away suddenly to vet school
he went lame on christmas day on one foot only we thought an abscess to start with but never burst so got x-rayed on 9 jan and had 2% roatation
he has been sound now off drugs for 4 weeks and has been turned out daily in a tiny area for 2 weeks he got more stressed being in so thought it better for him to be out in a stable sized bit
allowed into a bigger area this week and also starting to go for short walks in hand as he has totally siezed up in his hocks with being in (he is 16 and has spavin)
he is coming in at night and is starving poor boy but id rather that than him having another attack
although he wasn't that much overweight we have stripped the weight off of him for his sake and i weigh tape weekly now
hopefully he is on the mend now, he got x-rayed again will be 3 weeks on monday and no change so he got heart bars on and has been much better since then and farrier back in 2 weeks and then the following week all going well i can start to get back on him, going to hire the big indoor school for the first few sessions so he has got plenty space and a lovely soft springy surface, he will also love going out some where too!
hope your girl is on the mend soon

ty

my mare was corn related she was box thinking tendon when she didnt come sound we thought abscess still nothing then xray showed lami so she has been boxed since july she wears magnetic boots which keeps her mobile also flexijoint.

so lami caused

rotation
sinking
loss of protein ( due to tape worm)

the abscess caused damage to new horn
second rotation and
sinking ,
and pedal bone infection
now on 15%

haylage caused a minor flare up

now no heat ( part from magnetic heat )
no pulse
infection has stayed the same ( stabilized ) i thought no hope with this

she was very lame 2 weeks ago due to second sinking because we could not keep styrofoam pads on due to her feet smaller so bare foot she sunk
( why i dont like barefoot when they are not stabilized )

now she has one ali shoe stuck on and she is more comfortable
she only got serious lami in one foot tho evidence in the others in the horn:)

What i have learnt through this is

dont give a lami lami haylage made her worse once protein levels gone up
no grazing on frosty ground wait till 11 am before turnout .
watch the grass intake
NO corn feeds.
watch your horse closely for any changes
not to take anything for granted

yes i stopped the haylage too and now on soaked hay my 3yo who is now home from the vets after being there 7 weeks is getting a mix of haylage (to use it up) and soaked hay once haylage finished no more will be getting bought, we are going to get a steamer for her hay and try him on the steamed hay too but very slowly for him, i just worry he isn't getting enough to eat during the day with the muzzle on, and not sure as his wasn't food realated if grass will flair up another attack but don't want to risk it just in case, he is now back in a bigger field so he can move about more and yesterday after fixing the fence between the 2 of them i took it down so they are in togeather again she had pulled the fence down 3 times so i gave up! so he will move about even more now he is with her so will be extra checks going on for the next few days
he is on cosequin for his joints and i also use bioflow boots or rug weather depending as the rug heats them up a fair bit
hope the infection goes in your one, have you tried any homeopathic stuff, different thing but my youngster had been at the vets for a very bad tendon infection 3 ops on the tendon sheath and then it moved to the pastern so another op on there but had the infection come back i was going to ask them to try a week on homeopathic stuff before they called it. One of the vets at our local practice is a homeopathic vet and i have talked to him last week and he is going to dig out stuff for both of them youngster more for her joint and will see what he can do for a laminitic but he did say there was one for infection that he may give to my young one too can't remember the name of it though.
really hope your girl pulls through - not sure i would have had much of a stable left had mine to be kept in that long, some repairs need doing to it!

Hi when i mean it stabilized i mean its no more ( thats what i believe )as she has no more pulse and vets stopped medication.

she was on batril potassium and norodine those anti biotics did the trick
we dont want to try anything new at this stage in case it starts a flare up till she is in more stable condition.

as in less lame and more growth on bad foot.

maybe you could could turn your boy out less hours without mask but give him add lib hay or large fibre feed first so he is full less likely to gorge when he is out ???

he gets a bit of happy hoof and his vits first thing and 1kg of hay that has been soaked overnight before he goes out, i have been taking the muzzle off at dinner time for 1/2 hr but will work that up to an hour over the next few weeks
i think it will be easier when he is back in work as i can then work off what he eats!
it is really yuck here today so going to take the muzzle off soon for a while then bring them in, don't see the point on them standing in the wind and rain when he can't even eat much
and i don't want my other one slipping and hurting her leg again either
