i think my grey (white) horse looks fairly naff in a white saddle cloth:o Is there any reason he cant have a black numnah or cloth for RC dressage?

Nope, no reason at all. OH sometimes uses a black one if I have skimped on my grooms duties and have forgotten to wash a white on in time! He is often the only one, but it isn't against the rules.

Naff? Naff? …nothing looks naff on a grey (ok just remembered a brown saddle cloth looked pretty naff on mine but he’s not greyed out yet) anyway back to subject, have you tried a white dressage square with that has the coloured piping/trim, this will set if off more against your grey horse, or perhaps to be a little different, a fish tail dressage square, or how about cream?

hmmm yeh possibly with a trim would look better... this is him, he is 15hh and very short backed so i dont like a cloth on him generally anway, i think they look huge:o

Yes I can see what mean, what size saddle do you have, is it a 17''? have you tried a cob size, think it depends which make you go for, my lad is very short and sometimes a full size looks too big on him, I think the shape has alot to account for as well.

Let me have a look and post you some ideas via links (I'm a expert in equine retail online window shopping!;))

aww bless you, thanks! yes its a 17" saddle i have, dont think i have a pic of him in the dressage saddle unfortunately

Eskadron Performance Dressage – white quilt with silver and black or blue piping.

HKM Dressage Cloth – white, diamond quilt, with gold piping

HKM ‘Chess’ Dressage Cloth – white, thin diamond quilt with a little Knight chess piece log in in bottom, black and white, black piping (although could be navy blue)

Equi theme Poly Filled dressage cloth - with white rope beading, large diamond quilt and shaped well for a more forward cut GP saddle.

HORZE Elite Dressage Saddle Pad - white with brown trim and a little logo on bottom right or the HORZE GP saddle cloths which again are shaped more for a GP but still in the typical square saddle cloth shape rather than numnah shape.

You could buy one that you could have his name on the bottom corner to set it off a bit, if you’re into personalized stuff, so white with black writing or nave blue.

Also, if you are quite creative, you could buy a plain white dressage square and add a trim of diamantes around the bottom quarter (bit like the shires performance dressage cloth with the diamantes) but you could choose your own colour diamantes/crystals, for example black and silver ones...if that is your into a little bling :D or just add say a cluster of stars which you should be able to pick up templates to sew on from your local arts and crafts store.

thanks for those:D Im not arty in any way shape or form, lol, sadly. the hkm looks nice, think id need to find something in cob, fullsize looks huge on him:o

I have a short-coupled grey (although at 16.2hh he's a bit bigger than your boy) and he looks lovely in blue. I have a gorgeous HKM french blue numnah, piped in silver and it breaks him up without swamping him.

Also a fan of black . . . agree that white just looks odd.

Any reason you don't fancy using just a black numnah? My mare (despite being grey!) is in a white saddle cloth as she has plenty of back so it suits her and balances the look, but OH mare is v compact and usally just has a black numnah - just what suits each of them. What ever colour you go for I think less is more when it comes to trim etc. Subtle in colours for dressage (just go mad for bling!!). Lovely looking chap btw!

thank you! Id love to just use a numnah tbh, im not fond of cloths! I have a black one with white piping, or the plain black in the pic...? was just worried a cloth was more correct.

I have a 16'2" grey who is getting whiter with age, therefore a white or cream numnah/cloth gets lost on him. I now use a black numnah, although also have black with sheepskin lining one as well. Agree that blue would also look nice but would just say to use whatever you like.

If you can, why don't you borrow different numnahs/cloths off friends to see what you like before buying one.

I actually think black numnahs look very nice on greys for dressage :) It's smart but still conservative.

Also agree with the idea of trimming. Perhaps red or gold or something?

Certainly no need to use a cloth, it's just fashion. A numnah is just as correct. I have a friend who competes at Medium with her coloured cob. A square looks odd on him as it cuts up his markings. She always uses a white numnah even at National final level.

Both sound lovely, I'd go with whatever is clean on the day! Enjoy your outing!

I loath the white saddle blankets that have become the dressage norm - they cut the horse into two!

I rarely ever use a saddle blanket so it's not a problem for me. A saddle coloured shaped one would look fine.

White looks naf on greys? Rossi and I disagree (then again, I did dress him up as a space shuttle for a dressage to music class... maybe my opinions on style shouldn't count!)

I personally think a white (or maybe off white to emphasize his coloring) saddlepad or numnah with some sort of bind or piping in a dark color would look nice, it's still smart but looks more flattering that pure white.
