Only if the grey parent is homozygous, if not there is 50/50 chance of grey.

ETA if the grey sire has ever produced a non grey foal he will be heterozygous and will pass on the grey gene 50% of the time.
 
yep all greys are born non grey. save yourself a lot of wondering and just get it tested! I use horsedna.co.uk
 
No, colour is not routinely checked for when doing passports - think how many horses have the wrong colour entered in their passport. The DNA test my horses had is for parentage only (AHS passport).
 
ok thanks, do you think a stud would test a foal if you asked or would you take their word that the foal won't grey out? :)
 
Some Studs will be happy to DNA for grey for you, it depends on the individual people involved. You can ask and see what they say.

As a side note - I have seen more true Duns already DNA'd ready for sale (especially quarter horses and PRE's) than Buckskins (unless a PRE as they have both the Dun and Cream gene in the breed) so the people breeding those breeds have welcomed DNA testing for colour, which is lovely.
 
The foal in question is actually headed to goresbridge next week so is it likely they have tested already? :)
