hello!

One of the people at our yard has just rescued a 5month old Sec A foal who was an orphan. She is doing brilliantly, but i had a question.

The foal is chestnut, but his new owner is sure he will turn grey - actually it is a bit of a joke between us as she is mad on greys and I prefer ginger horses. Having seen lots of photos of your foals when young, those that turn grey seem to have grey 'sunglasses'. Her foal doesn't have these, do ALL horses and ponies who are going to grey later in life have them as foals, or is it something they have for a few weeks then lose, or is it a case that only some horses have them?

Obviously there is a lot of mickey taking riding on this, so if one of the people who is knowledgeable about colours could answer that would be great!

Thanks!

It really depends on the rate of how quickly they will go grey. If they are born with grey sunglasses, they usually will go grey very quickly. Others that don't have the sunglasses, grey at a slower rate.

So, seeing as he is 5 months and hasn't a white hair on him (apart from in his blaze), she MAY have a pony that will turn grey, but it will not be for a bit of time IF he changes.

EXCELLENT, looks like I can take the mickey about her having a ginger pony for a few months to come then, and hopefully for the rest of the pony's life!

Thanks very much for the info.
