So after a week of box rest, soaked hay, me picking and feeding him armfuls of nettles and goose grass, trotted him up this afternoon. He ran out of bute on Monday, ditto the sedalin. He is short on his left fore in walk, slight shortness in trot . . . not pottery on the turns, no digital pulse I can feel, no heat, no dips in the coronet band, no thrush that I can see.

Vet was supposed to be coming tomorrow but hasn't confirmed. Will get the farrier out to take his shoes off and ask vet to come out and x-ray. Honestly, I expected to see much more of an improvement so am very disappointed. Also, now questioning the lami diagnosis . . .

:(.

Lami doesn't just disappear:o and even when the pulses are gone there is still dmagae done to the laminae which doesn't heal or repair it self. You have to let the hoof grow out and new laminae to replace the damaged. Pedal bone rotation can only be seen by x-ray - my mare had no dips in the coronet band but still had rotation in her fore limbs.

I would urge you to conitnue to treat as lami until you get it ruled out as you can do more dmage unintentionally and undo all the good work you have done so far.:o

My horse had lami last summer/autumn, we're still dealing with the after effects now I believe. Her "rings" aren't anywhere near grown out so that gives an indication of how long we still have left to go.
I remember reading here, it wont fix - it needs to grow NEW and sound.

Don't worry Slinks . . . continuing with the regimen - I'd rather be safe than sorry . . . at least until we've seen the x-rays to see what's happening inside those feet. Just was so hoping that we'd see more of an improvement. Poor boy is so, so desperate to go out and so thoroughly fed up.

Ah well - bring on the x-rays.

It takes 9 - 12 months for a complete new hoof to grow through and all the dead laminae to be trimmed away. OYu should avaoid lunging during this time as it out stress on the hoof capsule and can do more damage. Laminitis rehab and management is a long term thing:o

Doing to much to soon just does more damage:o

Honestly, you've got months ahead of this :( takes them so long to get back to 100% sound after lami, mysti was unsound for about 6 months (not all the lami some was her stifle) and still has off days if theres a flush of grass through its a life long condition

Oops just realised it didn't all get posted

.. It's a lifelong condition in my opinion, in all the cases I've seen they haven't ever coped very well with grass again :(

Sigh. I know.

Thank you.

Been doing alot of reading up and talking to various people - including some at the yard . . . this just jumped out at me . . . (from the BEVA, among others)

Good Grass

It is not just the quantity of grass that is important in the development of laminitis; it is the type of grass and the sugars it contains. Nowadays, many horses and ponies are livveried on pasture which was once used for cattle. This type of grazing may have been heavily fertilised and re-sown with particular species of grass which are not suitable for horses and ponies.

Apparently this is exactly how our pasture has been/still is managed.

My poor boy.

Well, once he's sound enough to work (and I'll be wanting to be extremely conservative about that - in no great hurry), we'll be doing nothing more strenuous than slow/gentle/straight line work in the school and out hacking and perhaps some long-reining - no lunging.

I just want to get to the point that he can go out for a leg stretch in a field - even if it's only for half an hour - for his mental health . . . but, again, I won't be rushing it.

Mine was in from April until September - mucked out round her etc - she didn't leave it once:o when she did go out she went out for 15 minutes and it was built up slowly - she almost had to learn to walk again:o BUT it was worth every minute to get her painfree and working again:)

Polarskye - I know how you feel, it's swings and roundabouts! You feel like your getting somewhere then you have to backtrack/change plans and it's so frustrating :( there were several times in Mystis recovery when I thought if she still hasn't improved in a few weeks may have to PTS but you just have to stick with it and not be tempted to rush it!

I've just uploaded a video I took of mysti today (called mysti - a year after acute laminitis, can't get a direct link on my phone!) shows her sound, happy and bouncing round the field as she does everyday :)*

Please don't panic at the amount of grass! :p I've only got 2 ponies and mysti panics if she's in on her own so they both only got out for 2 hours a day at the mo until the woodchip pen is sorted and then mysti will be in that most of the day :)*

It's taken a long time to get her to this but we got there eventually!
