. . . it's nothing horrific, he's about 1/10th lame, there's no (discernible) heat or swelling and judging by the skid marks in the field he's been slipping about/being silly and tweaked himself. Have rested him and will trot him up and lunge him tomorrow to see how he is.

But I am so, so sick of the mud now . . . yard is lovely, fields are lovely, but with this amount of water mud is inevitable . . . and I'm tired of slipping and sliding everywhere turning the horses out/putting up haynets/checking companions, etc. I'm tired of worrying about mud fever. I'm tired of having wet feet (boots leak). I'm tired of trying to keep a grey clean.

Anyone else?

Yup :(
Just fed up with seeing waterlogged fields & soggy animals (tho to be fair we had a 2 day respite at the weekend)

Sorry to hear about Grey Donk x

Thanks Hon - he'll be fine . . . it's just been a long old slog for all of us . . . and there doesn't seem to be a respite in sight.

I was watching the lunchtime news and the images of the railway line at Dawlish was amazing/sickening . . . train tracks hanging in the air because the underlying rock has been washed away - that effectively cuts off all rail traffic between Cornwall and London - causing more economic loss to the south west.

My ginger beastie is staying in currently, fields are gross with no grass and all she will do is run about and slip into fence till she is caught again.
So she can stay in, go on the walker and be ridden!

I am totally fed up with it too, but try to keep telling myself it is February and in 2012 it was this wet all year.

If only I could find a pair of welly boots that last more than 3 weeks before leaking that do not cost the equivalent of a months supply of haylage.

Yes totally fed up with sliding around every day and I have 2 greys to keep clean. Not that I'm bothering much mind you. ;) But at the end of the day we choose to have horses so it's part of it really. Makes you appreciate the good days more. I really feel for those whose properties are totally under water and for who mud is the least of their problems. :(

Hope Kali gets better soon. x

Sounds like a plan :).

Unfortunately, I can't keep my boy in . . . he hates being in by himself and will just be a sweaty, box-walking mess . . . we do have grass (away from the gateways) and, until Sunday afternoon, he was behaving in the field. It's a Catch 22 isn't it? In or out? Got to do what's best for the individual horse.

We are resting "his" field or he'll have no grass come summer . . . I am trying to restrict turnout . . . we are making full use of the walker . . . but he's lame so he can't be ridden/work.

I know we're not alone . . . and that we are much better off than some . . . but it is still getting to me a little. Still, the days are getting longer, there are catkins on the trees, the birds are singing (when it's not raining) and I know Spring isn't far away.

I'm on the South Coast of Devon and it has been absolutely horrendous in the past 24hrs, luckily my livelihood isn't at risk unlike so many others around me. Homes damaged, rail line closed, ferries cancelled and bridges closed, getting anywhere is a nightmare.

My fields have never flooded up until January this year but the wettest Jan on record plus the gales in the past couple of days has meant there is so much standing water and I can only get to the yard by 4x4, roads are too flooded for a normal car.

I'm amazed none of mine have mud fever!

Oh I'm with you - back in 2007 our house flooded (we have since moved) . . . it was horrible (and that's putting it mildly). I can't imagine how the folks in Muchelny (for example) are feeling - cut off, flooded, no end in sight. They must be watching the weather forecast every morning with increasing dread :(.

Like you, I am not really bothering that much to keep Kal clean . . . there's no point . . . he gets a brush when the mud dries, I wash his tail (covered in mud dreadlocks) once a week, and that's currently it. But I'm a tad OCD where he is concerned and I'm sick of handling mud-encrusted rugs, seeing him look tatty and unloved . . . etc. I know, I need to get my priorities straight!

Hope he heals quickly, mine has tweaked check ligament and is starting 2 months box rest - boo, mud not too bad but he was just being a divy with all the rain/ wind and ballet has caught up with him!
