It's no biggie . . . he has a virus - probably flu . . . but he's very, very low - poor so and so has just retreated inside himself because he feels so rubbish.

Vet came yesterday and injected him with Finadyne - I have Finadyne paste to give him (he had one whole tube this morning) and he's getting two bute every evening (which I have to syringe into him because he isn't remotely interested in food). He's drinking a tiny bit and I'm putting electrolytes in his water (and syringing some into him), but he isn't really eating his hay either. He now has the squits due to all the bute, the other meds and his general rubbishness. He is quite dehydrated, but his gums are nice and pink and moist (rather than tacky) and vet said his heart rate, while elevated, isn't worrying. Gut and lung sounds yesterday were fine. I'm taking his temp twice a day and it's elevated . . . the Finadyne/bute seems to help, but doesn't bring it down to normal levels

I've got some apples, carrots and bananas to tempt him to nibble and get some fibre/fluid into him (albeit a tiny amount). I'm going to go hedgerow foraging to see what early greenery I can snaffle to offer him.

I hate seeing him like this - he's beyond pathetic and obviously very, very sore everywhere.

Please, please can I have some famous HHO vibes for him . . . he's been "off" since Tuesday evening and, while he isn't worse, he isn't better either. Vet isn't overly worried (bloods are being run to rule out scary stuff), but I'd like him to pick up now - had enough of worrying about him.

Poor grey donk, hopefully he will pick up soon and be back to normal, if he is not drinking much try tempting him with a bit of sugarbeet well soaked and ensure he always has plain water as the electrolytes may put him off, raising a bucket off the floor may also help as it can hurt to put their heads down when they are feeling stiff and rubbish generally.
Once his temperature comes down he should feel better and you can stop worrying so much.

Good point about raising the bucket - although he currently stands with his head on the floor most of the time because he's feeling so appalling. He won't touch sugarbeet or copra - I've tried that. He has two buckets - one with plain water and one with electrolytes (although they're apple flavoured so should taste nice).

Just back up to yard now armed with apples, carrots and bananas to tempt him.

O Polarskye you have my sympathies..my mare has been ill since beginning of the year - not eating forage/hard feeds - drinking a little..licking lots of salt standing with head down not interested in anything. Vets said heart rate steady..lungs quiet and breathing not strained so we have had three lots of bloods taken and tested which showed infection so we have been changing the type of antibiotics and I am hopeful she is coming good now as yesterday she was interested in eating and had her head over the door wanting to be outside. I hope GreyDonkey and you feel better soon.
