Gridwork?

Can anyone recommend a distance to put the jumps at for gridwork?

Planning on doing a set of three jumps at one stride apart each up to about 2ft6.

Lil is a very short striding 16.1hh, trainer recommended doing lots of grids to supple her shoulders and get her picking up but forgot to ask what distance he had them at in my lesson.

It's summer holidays so my brain might not be functioning properly but normally 8 human strides for a 1 strided double (2 for landing, 4 for a stride, 2 for take off) but as the fence are small you might find 7 strides easier.

I've probably got that wrong, mum sets up the grids for me!

A horse stride is approximately 12' long so as the poster above says it will be approximately 24', 8 human strides (2 for landing, 4 for the horse's one stride & then 2 for take off). You may have a shorter sriding horse but do not shorten up the distances as this will do you no favors. When you take him out to a show the course builder builds for the average horse stride (12') & you will have problems making the distances. You will need to work your horse & lengthen him so he has ther 12' stride. Similarly large striding horses have to be trained to shorten a little or they have a similar problem with being buried into the base of a fence. Good Luck.

Oh, if you wanted to do bounce fences then they are 12' a part.
