Can anyone offer advice on recovering from the death of my beautiful 9 yr old Clydesdale. Is it possible to love a horse too much. After considerable research and veterinary advice I went ahead with an operation for him. Supposed to be 1% risk. He never recovered from the operation. I now find out that anaesthetics and heavy horses are not a good mix. He was my happiness and a major part of my life. If I had refused the operation he would have lived the rest of his life as a pet. I feel so guilty that I agreed to the operation. He had the most lovely personality. My world is so empty.

I can imagine how sad you are feeling.I know the heartache of losing a beloved horse Its such an empty feeling and takes a while to get over.Guilt is hard to deal with as you feel responsible for his fate but you were not expecting this outcome especially after the low risks. Its just such bad luck and a cruel twist of fate. One consolation is you gave him a wonderful life and he did not suffer.Take time to grieve and I am sure you will gradually accept it and remember him with love.

I'm so sorry. To lose a horse leaves a huge hole in our heart. Nothing will make it feel better right now - grieving has no timetable. I had my mare of 25 years PTS 2 years ago (she was 29) and it still hurts like hell. Regret nothing as there is never a right or wrong decision. It's braver to make that dreaded decision, than to do nothing. Don't punish yourself please - and never feel guilty. Be strong - time will heal.
