I have someone local who is not a qualified groom and does not have specific insurance riding out and caring for my two horses on a private yard (which has no insurance either).

I am fully insured, as are the horses but I have had trouble finding an insurance company that will let me insure her saying that as I am not a business I cannot insure her or if I am a business I need company details - which I am not and don't have.

What does everyone else do in this situation? In today's litigious society and am well aware that the present situation is far from ideal..

I have called most major insurance companies (and the BHS) and am really drawing a blank here - can anyone help?

Thanks

I am with NFU and on my policy is allows me to provide two persons name covered under the personal accident bit. I have me and my OH. Can she not take her own rider insurance out? I know most insurance companies do this if you dont have a horse but have lessons say. Also would she not be covered under your third party liability if she becomes injured? Am not sure how you would stand if you are paying her though.... might have to keep that bit quiet ( you dont say if you are ) I am a bit surprised the yard doesnt have insurance thought they would have to.

What do you want to insure for? Her damaging your horses or your horses damaging her?

It is a tricky one as she really needs to be a self employed business doing free lance grooming/riding etc

If its just insurance for her incase she hurts herself then I would recommend

Good luck

If you are paying her i would have said its upto her to get her own insurance. Harsh i know but she should understand the difficulties you have in these circumstances. If she is not prepared to do this then thats upto her. You are doing right by considering it. If you dont manage to find any i would talk to her and maybe get something in writing that she understands she is not insured through your company.

I am concerned about her, but also people making a claim third party against me, if (something god forbid!) happened whilst she is out hacking.
Some one did mention putting insurance on my house hold insurance - will look into that....

well I'd certainly get her to have her own rider insurance which will cost her about 50 quid a year and then she'll have 3rd party liability whilst hacking and some personal injury cover as well

that won't cover her injuries on the ground whilst say mucking/turning out

makes interesting reading

It implies that you DO require employers liability insurance, not just 3rd party liability, even if you could say she is self-employed and contracting to you as you supply most of the items needed for her employment.

This sort of thing is why I keep my yard very small and do everything myself - saves SO much hassle of this sort

it suggests you talk to them or the Citizens Advice Bureau to see what your liability it

the end of the document says you can be fined £2500 per DAY for every day you don't have the £5million required insurance

I'd sort this out sharpish if I was you

What about the Grooms club/association mentioned in this week's Horse & Hound - it's £17.50 a year to join and includes insurance - details in H&H, fairly near the front as I remember.
