do it properly?!

On the back of the furminator thread (I dunno even what that is)...I've got two German Shedders, and both are moulting at the moment. I am vacuuming twice a day, and I've still got hobbit feet from the tumbleweed hair blowing around my house.

I am regularly brushing my two with a brush I got years ago that's paddle shaped and has lots of little needles. It does pull out the hair but my two don't really like it, and I'm sure there must be a better and more efficient way. I'm brushing the big one almost every day but the fur just comes and comes.. I'm drowning in fur! It's in all my clothes, in the car, in my food.. Help me!

Any suggestions on what tools to buy and how to use them would be gratefully received! I'm happy to groom and groom if it means not having piles of fur around my house (and I'm not even kidding about the piles!)

Thanks.

Brushes have come a long way since the days of a simple slicker or pin brush...I've just googled new slicker brushes and got a whole range of brushes that makes me want to buy a few new ones too...here's just one eg

So I'd start by getting a good hard slicker and also a soft slicker,a fine metal comb with a handle on to really get into the coat...the handle will be easier on your wrists.
Bath the dog during its shedding period and dry with a blaster drier...perhaps you can do the drying outdoors ,as they do encourage the hair to fly out.

I don't like furminators, but sometimes they really can be a godsend in coats which are so dense they need an extra hand to get the excess undercoat out.

A supplement such as flax seed oil in the food also will help the skin to be healthy and some say cuts down on everyday shedding.

Good job it's going to be warm this week, because baths for my boys involve being secured to a towing eye and blasted with the hose hehe!

I will see about getting a soft and hard slicker and a rake and report back! Thanks!

......and if you do buy a blaster drier, which I heartily recommend, you can also use them for

Checking deep into the coat for ticks etc
Blowing leaves.
Unblocking drains.
Clearing cobwebs...
The uses are endless, and I'm not joking.

Ooh they look good! I usually just use an old hairdryer!

I bathed them both today, in a great deal of detail. I normally just go over them all in one go with the shampoo then rinse but today I really rubbed it in hard to try and get the undercoat to loosen and I worked on different bits at a time. Used loads of shampoo then they had to have a very serious rinse but they both look fantastic. My yard looks like a hair bomb went off, and I have some concerns about my neighbour's washing. However better outside than in!

I went over them with my old brush and tomorrow I'll get some new brushes as suggested. I think the bigger one is much more comfortable after his bath. The little one is a cute fluffball! Hopefully we'll start to make inroads into the hair now!
