I was thinking of buying my own grooming kit again due to the last one being stolen a few years back:( But during the summer I intend to loan so having my own would be very useful. My question is, is it better to buy a box on it's own and then buy brushes separately or Box with brushes supplied? Also which is better to buy, a grooming box or one of the bags?

I started out with a big tack box with just the basics, ie plastic curry comb, body brush, face brush, water brush, a couple of dandy brushes (hard and soft bristles) and several hoof picks (they seem to magically sprout legs and disappear on my yard :(), and have built it up over the course of time depending on what I needed, I now have all sorts of random things in my box!!

I went down the buy everything separately route as found it to be cheaper, but now there are some good deals around, such as the Bentley grooming kits in bags. I've always used boxes but a bag seems easier for showing as they're easier to carry around! Hope that helped a bit :)

I might get a box as I've found a Norton one which looks pretty sturdy as colour co-ordinates a Mark Todd blouson I want to get on sale! :D

I bought bits and pieces from amazon and my local tack shop as it worked out cheaper and for my birthday my mum bought me a grooming kit box that has a removable tray in the top for carting my stuff round and the box doubles as a mounting block/step it only cost her £20 - love my mothership :D

I like the look of the bags but I just prefer the boxes.

Box every time.
At least you can see what you want at a glance rather than rummaging around in a dusty bag ;)

Those trays are always useful, why though, are they called TACK trays

We have this sort of thing (except ours cost $10 at Walmart). Easy to move about, easy to store, easy to clean, just tip everything out, hose it out and start all over again.

When I actually had more than two brushes, two curry combs, a hoof pick and a hairbrush I had a wicker basket, got absolutely filthy of course, and hoof picks always got stuck in it but I liked it.

I have one of these for everyday use.

For your basic kit
Dandy Brush, Rubber or Plastic Curry Comb, Body Brush, Hoof Pick, Couple of old face cloths, different colours, one for face one for bum. A stable rubber for a final polish and can be used to cover the box when not in use - if you can't get one a good Linen tea towel works just as well.

If you are in no particular rush, keep an eye out for free grooming kits coming up for subscribing to a horsey magazine.

'Your Horse' or 'Horse & Rider' (am I allowed to swear such words on a H&H forum?!) I can't remember which one now, are always offering free kits/fleece rugs/coats etc to take out a subscription!

Sadly Ireland always get excluded from those offers!

I keep mine in a bucket!

Cheaper, bigger, easy to see everything, easy to clean, you can hang bottles of spray off the edge ... and you always have a spare bucket in case of emergency!

I'd always buy bits of kit individually; the kits always seem to have random things in them that hardly ever get used. Unless you're horseproud or competing, you can get away with a body brush, a hoofpick, and a plasic curry comb for pretty much everything :D
