Are cactus cloths any good for removing dried on mud? my 2 cobs live out and are very muddy - a stiff dandy/mud brush just won't cut it!!
Plastic curry comb not too good either........

Also thinking of getting some pig oil for their tails - thinking it maybe easier to get the mud out then!! have no experience of using it so tips would be good!! ie does the tail need washing before applying or can you just brush the worst mud out then apply? how often do you use etc........

Thanks :D

I have a mitt which is fluffy one side and cactus the other. This works on my fine WB coat with dried on mud but couldnt say about a cob coat. Works very well if hair is short though :)

You can use pig oil on a dirty tail, it's great stuff. It will stop mud from sticking and you only need to use in the tail about once a week

You'd probably not be able to spray on pig oil TBH: what I do is put a little in a bowl/container and then use a sponge if applying to the coat and/or a brush or plastic curry comb if applying to the tail/mane and then just brush through. Personally I'd make sure the mane or tail was clean first. It will certainly mean the mud doesn't stick and makes the coat lovely & shiny.

But would repeat advice re patch testing first especially if applying to the legs area. My boy has white hair on his legs and pink skin, and when I used it with sulphur he reacted quite badly and came up very hot & pink, poor lad. But what I do know is mix it with a few drops of either Tea Tree oil or Neem Oil if midges are around (he's got sweet itch) and it works a treat.

Fantastic stuff.

Good advice, thank you.
Its for the mare in my pic, she is very pink skinned - she doesnt have much feather and neither does the boy whos a D - its mainly there thick tails they need it on!

i have never had trouble with burning in the sun.it is called pig oil because it was used to keeps pigs soft and when you show them.
a little sandwich box with a lid and sponge in is ideal.
mix with flowers of sulphur for sore bits

I use pig oil pretty much all over my boy - obviously patch tested first. Robinsons do a spray bottle - or just look on ebay. I buy a big can every so often and top up the spray bottle from that. I spray directly onto feathers and tail, then spray onto an old body brush and give a quick swipe over any bits that don't go under tack.

It works like a dream - any mud that sticks has dried and dropped off by morning. I've sprayed in onto dirty tails and legs and it takes longer to 'look' clean, but give it a couple of days and the hair will be shiny clean underneath :)

You can use it in a spray - Robinsons sell it in a spray container but I find the best sprayer for it is an empty Ciff bottle! It's also cheaper to buy by the litre.

Trust me on this, you don't want to be washing tails on horses that live out and getting their legs wet. Just spray your pig oil all through the tail then get to work with your brush (or curry comb if it's very thick). It might take you a while to get through the tail, but add more oil as you go, then just give it a quick spray and brush once a week. You'll find your horse has a clean tail all the time. We do our hunters every friday and I don't think i've washed a tail all year
