If any of you have a groom, or your yard does, how much do they get paid and for what work/hours?
Does anyone/any yard have live in grooms? Does anyone groom in return for use of a horse?
Or is anyone a groom who can let me know what hours and jobs they do and what pay they recieve?
I'm in the process of looking for a part time groom for my yard, and keen to know what suits people best in regards to work, pay, hours etc
Thanks

I used to get £200 per week live in but I did horses, children, house and garden too so worked about 12 hours a day. I think a part time groom should get around £7 - £10 an hour or its not worth it for them.

I worked the summer as a groom for pennies. I did it for a reference. If I was going to groom again I agree that over £7 an hour would be needed for it to be worth it for me.

I worked between 7 and 16 hour days.

16 hours is about what I do now! I live onsite and its my own yard so I'm always working! Ideally I want someone flexible who can do a few hours some mornings, and the occasional daily cover as and when and possibly house sit sometimes too.
Would you be bored as a groom if you didn't get to ride? Do most grooms expect riding as a job or not?

I'm quite rural, so perhaps it wouldnt be worth someones time and effort to drive out to be, unless I find someone local. Does anyone groom and live in? How do you find it?
Would grooms in general be happy with a few mornings a week for a decent wage plus the occasional full day or evening bringing in and feeding, normal jobs such as turn out, mucking out, feeds, hay water and the odd bit of poo picking. House sitting occasionally and riding as an added extra is they wanted. Is that 'normal' or something someone would look for in a groom job?

This is pretty much what our groom does (regular afternoons, plus the odd morning, plus house sitting) and it's worked for 3 years now.

Try advertising in your local paper, we've always found grooms by putting adverts in the Yorkshire Post and then the Shropshire Star.

If you want someone to live in try a national publication like H&H.

Thanks! Its nice to know some people have a good relationship with a groom and it all works out well, have been hearing a few horror stories recently!

I have a great groom and pay £10 a hour, she is a hard working girl and has a really positive attitude and basically, I think that is a steal for someone who has trained and is good at their job and looks after your horses like they were her own.

She also sometimes competes one of my horses - I pay for the entrance fees, etc and she puts in extra hours schooling. That arrangement works for both of us and to be honest it really helps me enjoy my horses having someone like that around!

I currently groom at a livery/event/teaching yard. I get minimum wage (so £5.80/hour) and work a ten hour day, with no official breaks. If I don't manage to finish the yard on time I work un-paid until the yard is done. I do occasionally get to leave early if I finish early and we have no lessons, so that probably balances out. I do everything from all the normal horse care, yard maintenance, exercising (mostly lungeing, riding when I'm needed to)... down to silly little things like running errands for my boss.
It's ok short-term but I don't think it could be a long-term job for most people. Odd hours like what you are offering could potentially be attractive to people, especially if you are willing to pay for what the person is worth. If I were you I'd try advertising it and see what kind of response you get!

I would have loved to have worked for someone like you in my time - I did 10 years of grooming admitedly all over the world but for not a lot of money - i did love it but as i got older the need for a living overtook the love !!
If more people had your attitude there would be a lot more experienced and older grooms out there
