This morning I noticed PF's tail was mucky and she had ickiness on her back legs... on closer examination of her foofie I saw.... MAGGOTS *barf* She's had NO symptoms of any kind of discomfort until today, bar a bit of tail swishing. Hasn't even scratched her bum. I even CHECKED her vulva yesterday and it looked absolutely fine. The f***ers were burrowing away INSIDE her *barf BARF*.
This is what I surmise happened: PF has been caslicked. Not the usual caslick, but she was sort of 'laced up' without being cut, so that when the stitches come out, she'd have no wound. WELL, it appears that she must've pulled the stitches or otherwise caused herself a slight lesion where the holes were because THIS is what I found this morning after I cleaned her up a bit (stitches removed)

The lesions are exactly where the holes were

Imagine my disgust and HORROR that this happened to MY horse who is easily the best looked-after horse on the yard (not that the competition is very fierce

) I would NEVER have missed them if they'd been on the outside and I'm kicking myself for not having a proper poke around days ago...
They must've been there for at least a couple of weeks, judging by the size of some of the maggots!!! Vet says to worm her again as they might've gone up further!!!!
Horrified doesn't even begin to describe how I feel, but vet says this sort of thing is VERY very common in this part of the world

Now I'm on the case she should be absolutely fine in a few days.

Im horrified that is an infestation if ever i saw one, what a little lamb to have not shown any signs of pain.

Awww poor PF, I'm sure it looks worse than it is. My old boy (Solo

) had them in his foot once, he'd had a bit of thrush but there was nothing there one day and the next day his foot was crawling with millions of the little nasties. I forget what we put on him to clear them (it may have been hydrogen peroxide) but a day or so later he was fine - I remember vet saying they would get rid of the thrush anyway!

Sheep get them a lot over here too, especially around the vulva / under the tail, they seem to appear almost over night so don't feel too bad. Once they are killed off and cleaned up they heal very quickly.

Hope PF is better very soon

yeuk. well spotted, 10/10 to you.
umm, i know it is a vile thought, but wouldn't you have done better to leave them for a little while to eat the necrosing tissue, i thought they were good at that, won't touch healthy tissue but will get rid of all the nasty stuff and then it can heal properly...

Wrong kind of maggots, I think. These caused the damage. Vet says there must have been a small wound for the flies to lay their eggs in, but all that horridness is their work *bleurgh*

ahh that does look disgusting

well done for noticing though, and bless her for letting you touch it. hope she's back to normal soon

Poor PF!!!

It can happen quite often here, specially on summer, or when it is hot (just like this week; Autumn but hot). Too many flies; one afternoon you don't notice a thing, next morning you see all those fast growing f***ers there!!!

Please use pomada Cacique ASAP, it's the very best!! It can also be used to prevent this happening, keeping flies and bugs away from small wounds.
She will get well soon.

Havent seen the pics yet as comp takes forever and a day to show me any frigging thing...............

. Dont blame yourself, the flies could have done their foul deed this morning and the eggs could have already hatched
ooo.gif
. You didnt overlook anything, you are still an ace owner and Im sure PF will forgive you

Ahh it does look gross but I promise you it does look much worse than it is, my mare was once picked up by her tail by a field companion, we checked her over and there was no obvious wound. Two days later it was loaded with maggots and she had to have part of her tail cut away (we thought she would lose it, it looked so bad). Vet said there myst have been a tiny puncture wound that they had invaded and then hatched under her skin, it was gross and smelt but she made a really quick recovery and once her hair had grown back from the portion cut away you could not even see that she had had so much damage.

Well done you, for noticing it.

Poor PF, poor you!

At least you noticed and have dealt with it. As others have said, they won't have been in there long! Even over here the little f***ers hatch quickly. My little Welsh was beaten up by the big Welsh, I took him home and cleaned him up including washing out the wounds with saline. I decided he'd better go the vet as he was showing signs of being in shock (it was an horrendous attack) so rang them. I loaded him and took him straight over. Time from my washing the wounds out to vet examination was just over an hour and I was horrified when the vet retched as he looked at the wounds and apologised as "maggots always make him retch". Apparently in warm weather the eggs only need to be expelled from the fly's body to hatch out.

PF will be fine and fly free in no time!

You must have been beside-yourself, poor mare, but so good. Don't blame yourself at all, but well done for spotting it when you did.

She's much better this morning, especially after I went in with tweezers and picked the little f***ers out!! All dead, thankfully, but I expect more will be popping out over the next few days. Wound is very clean (oddly enough probably thanks to the maggots!)

Poor pf. You do you best for your horses I know you do. I had something similar on one of mine. It was a sheef fluke that I saw the cut (up her bum too) as she swished her tail when she walked away from me. We will never know to this day how she did it. But the vet showed us what to do and it healed remarkably well. Don't beat yourself up about it. And big hugs to PF and of course little Cigar!!!!

Dear heaven that looks awful. Bless her though for being so good to let you clean them out when it must be so sore

Can we have an update of the wounds in a day or two to see how they are healing?

Oh that is mank. Poor PF must have felt horrible. Honestly though don't feel bad, the little buggers get a hold so fast it's untrue.

I bet PF is feeling relived today, poor love.

bleuggh!
but well done for seeing it! I bet eating after that has been a challenge!! eugh!

Hope it all clears up though

Yuuuuuckkk!

My old mare Jenny got some in her head last year. She'd bumped her head in the field, but it was nothing - v minor bump that they all get from time to time. O/h was checking to see that it was healing, & it was crawling with the little f-ers! She is quite furry as she's got Cushings, so the situation could v easily have been overlooked. Got the vet straight out & felt *awful* - the horses live at home & I like to think that I do a good job of looking after them.

The vet said that they hatch out *very* quickly when it's warm, so they might only have been there for a few hours. He hates them too. Wormed her, cut all the eggy fur off, put some frontline on the area + silver spray, gave her some sort of injection & that was the end of them.

So don't worry - even the best of us can have maggot infested horses!

Oh poor PF

It isn't bad management though! I used to have a polo pony (called Diabla, she was LOL) and one morning I found maggots in her feed manger - looked her over and was HORRIFIED to find an open wound under her chin from where the maggots had come, it was obvious and very gross! She was absolutely fine!
