As some of you know I recently purchased a 3 year old, I plan to break him this summer but I am in no rush as he is gangly and growing so if it doesn't happen it doesn't happen. I would however like to get him well established on the ground so that when I do back him he is as prepared as he can be. So far we have learnt to tie up, stand for the farrier, stand for the vet (including jab) and we have bitted him and done 2 X 10 minute lunging session in a roller with extremely loose side reins, bridle and cavasson. The side reins and lunge line were attached to the cavasson. He has taken to all this very well. However he doesn't understand individual word commands but responses well to up and down commands. Is this enough or should I persist with teaching him the individual words? Since then he has had a week off because I have been very busy and I also felt that was a lot of him to learn so a break will do him good.

Next I want to teach him to long rein but he is a little nervy with things round his bottom so are there things I can do to desensitise him to this before trying to long rein him. I want to do some spook training in the school so any ideas of things to include would be great. And any other ideas of good ground work to do with a 3 year old would be appreciated.

And finally he is frightened by spray bottles what is a good way to teach him about these?

Thank you for taking the time to read :)

To get him to long rein, lunge on two reins, then gradually move further behind him, spray bottle I just use little and often so they get used to it
