Growing youngster - puffy hocks?

I have a cob who`s rising 3, because he is such a good doer, he was just having haylage and grass and now just grass (restricted), as well as a couple of handlefulls of alfa-a lite twice a day, complete with a vitamin and mineral lick. However I thought I would try him on the NAF youngstock supplement and removed the vitamin and mineral lick and instead give him a scoup of this twice a day. However since putting him on this I have noticed that on the outside of both his hocks just above the point of hock there is a small puffy bit - it isn`t a bog spavin, thoroughpin, ocd - I`m pretty sure and it may just be coincidence that it occured at the same time as putting him on this!

Any ideas - is this common in growing horses or is it something to do with the supplement?

Also do you think such a supplement is necessary?

If your grass is good and he is a good doer any way i am not sure why you would want to feed him anything else?

My 3yr old lives out 24/7 and as of April hasnt had any feed just grass and he is doing brilliantly.

With regards to puffy hocks i would get your vet out.

If I remember rightly NAF youngstock is intended for 2 year olds and under so you're probably wasting your money here... a broad spec supplement like equivite or just a vit and min lick would be perfectly adequate for a 3 year old.

As for the 'puffy hocks' it could be a growth thing - my youngster has had the odd bit of puffiness at times which isn't desirable but not necessarily a drama. It is worth getting your vet out to check him. Is he lame at all?
