In the past couple of weeks my eldest dog, Box x Lab, has suffered from a growth/swelling on her tongue. Took her to the vets and they have told me that it is saliva that is clogged under the skin and its getting bigger.

Have been advised the best action would be to have OP to have the excess saliva removed and her saliva gland, in her throat, removed.

I have not heard of anything like this before now and just wouldn't whether it was a common??? Does anyone know of the proceedure and what will happen AFTER the op? Will she be able to produce saliva????? Questions, questions and more questions, Im sorry I know. I am due to see the vet soon but I am a little worry wort and want to find out as much as I can.

My lurcher had something similar last year. It was like a chubby hardish blood blister on her gum which spread onto her tongue so much she was having trouble swallowing. I took her to the vets and they were all for opening up too which filled me with dread; she is my pride and joy and I had nightmares about it as it's pretty tricky surgery, very delicate. Spoke to my friend vet who does the horses and he was a bit 'I'd be careful going down that route just yet' type intake of breath and suggested good old Synalux for a week to see if that shifted it, Touch wood, within the week it had cleared up and hasn't returned so I'm hoping that will be it so at least she didn't have to have surgery for it then.
Is there any chance you could try anti biotics first before they decide either way as it is a tricky op' (so I was led to believe by the first vets) I would have thought it's worth a try but if that's already been done, perhaps you have no other option unless you get a second opinion? I'm sorry and hope it all goes well for your dog.

She is getting on and they did say it wasn't an operation to take lightly. It hasn't got to a size that is effecting her eating. It is leaning on her lower side teeth and when I lift her lips to check you can see it "spill" out. She was tender, to touch, when it started to come up but now she seems to have no pain whilst handling her jaw area. I asked whether we can just give it a couple of weeks to see what happens before anything was decided and the vet agreed.

Thankyou, I really hope that what ever course we take she is in one piece, would break me if I lost her.
