i posted earlier about a horse of mine going to italy.. BUT now someone has planted the see dit may not be legit.. heres a run down of events..

3 weeks ago i advetise horse,. have a lady call up arrange to view, i have to cancel ,then mised each others calls etc finally arrange a viewing for today.

people turn up ( like 5 of them) get horse out, poke prod, see trotted up, feel legs feel all over, see me ride, then they ride in the school then take horse for a gallop,.

they offer much less than my asking price, i say no, i no its a good horse the least i will take is..

deal finally done ,.

but now im likw OHHHHHH .. is it iffy.. the bloke that viewed the horse, gave me hes bosses details, so i can email all my details etc bank details etc.

money is due to be transfered tomorrow. ive mad my bank aware of a hi value transaction to be made. it will take up to a month to get the horses export papers sorted. transport etc.

so money should be well cleared by then.

theres no vetting be done on the basis that i had the horse 5 staged 6 months ago, and he has to undergo a health check before travel .

seriousely.. soes this sound iffy atall? ive checked out the place the horse will be going to, have the blokes face book etc ( sorry cant give out to much detail at this point.)

so go on give me honest opinions. ive never sold a horse abroad, and this all sounds very ligit .. does any one smell a rat?

i cant really say as its a bit hush hush.. not anything iffy, just because of connecttions etc.

not showjumping eventing..

Naturally i'm a bit wary just because of what you hear about scams...but I seriously doubt a group of people would travel over and be this personal if they were just scam artists. Why did he give you his bosses details and not his own?

my boyfriend recently sold a horse to finland, the woman who bought him didnt even come + look at him, she saw him advertised, + bought him through an agent, who also had never seen him , it took a while as you say to sort out the export papers, but as long as you have the cash in your pocket before the horse leaves your company i dont see a problem.

the lady that originally rang me is in the same area as me, she was sourcing horses for the chap that came to try the horse., he is originally english.

the boss is paying fo rthe horse, and after i said no to the offer he spent a long time on the fone negotiating with hes boss that this was the horse for him .

1st horse viewed in england, viewing.. offer.. negotiations all done in about 2 and a half hours.

Well guess you're going to have to speak to the 'boss' to get a better understanding of the situation then.......

Not sure how any of us can really help you.

horse should not leave your yard until cash is in your hand, ie cleared funds, that cannot be wound back from your bank account ie if it sounds to be to good to be true, it probably is!!!!

Dont think I would have given out my bank details because of money laundering scams. What about asking for bankers draft.
The positive news is they dont normally visit if they are scamming.Having just let a horse go free to good home I insisted on speaking to owners vet is this a possibiility.

not yet.. only gave my details at 7pm tonight. will expect the transfere to be going through my bank by the end of the tomorrow.

also jm.. it will i belive take a while to get the export docs, transport etc arranged so it gives it time to clear 100% in my account .

I wouldnt send a horse abroad, would only sell in this country, dont think its fair on the horse all that travelling, if you feel its iffy it prob is trust your instincts there are plenty of people in this country that would love him x

neddie goes from the uk... in an rather nice lorry.. air con., auto matic water etc. has a night stop and off the lorry in holland. then on to italy.

the chap will stay intouch and i can go and visit. (although i wont be allowe dto ride the horse) ive no real reason to think its not legit.. just once the seed has been planted etc...

Might put your mind at rest if you speak to vet ,it helped me.Vet said she was wonderful person and horse would be well looked after that clinched it.I turned down other offers closer to home in favour of good references. If they are legit they wont mind you asking.

Is there any money in the account that you have give them details for? if so I would be tempted to transfer it to another, or at least make your bank aware of the situation, perhaps set up a password before any transactions from the accountcan be made.

My RI sold a horse unseen to a woman in America after her 'people' watched him jumping in France.
The woman is the CE of a top bank in America and the horse is living the life of a king in palatial surroundings in upstate NY.

Best of luck JH, hope it works out for you and the ned.

Are they buying other horses as well?
There was a similar thing to this going round a while ago connected to Arab horses. An agent buying for someone else saying it was for a new stud in Quatar or somewhere, got a whole lorry load together and off they went. It was all a bit odd because they weren't buying the top horses and I think they paid a maximum of £2,000 per horse.

Probably nothing at all like your sale, I just wonder why people would come all the way from Italy to buy a horse (unless it was a top class competition horse which yours might well be of course!).

then on to italy.

I hope we're talking about a mega bucks sale here - because no horse of mine would go to Italy I'm afraid.

its a 5k horse.. i know the job he will be doign and have had a google etc.. its all legit, and the woman that rang me to start off with is a friend of the guy, she is local and knew my horse from me showing him.
he came to england as he was lookign for a certain type of horse for the job. apparantly they dont tend to have well built flashy horses that are blemish free proven to the job to be done etc.

One of my ponies I sold to Finland - in much the same way as you describe. a local showjumper rang me up - came to see him with 3 "clients" then rang to confirm they would buy him that evening.
I had 3 separate incidents just like that when selling the same pony - one was a British dealer who was told about my pony by my YO, the others were from the France and Italy. (Pony was a grey Connemara class 1 so a very popular type abroad).
When I sold my 2nd pony - she went to Sweden - via a showjumping yard. Had similar visits by 2 groups from Finland, one from Italy and one from Switzerland and an Irish international rider based in the USA who just happened to see her at a show and thought she was ideal for his clients.

These sort of sales have been common-place in Ireland for years and years. I also know most of my friends sold their ponies to similar situations - one in particular was a smashing (then)9yo dapple grey Connemara x 12.2hh grade A who was used in the riding school for everything from complete beginners to kids jumping 1m. He went to a perfect family home in Greece to teach 2 little girls how to ride and isling out his days in luxury. His owners even took a trip over to visit him and stayed with the faimly who bought him 2 yrs after he was sold.
