Grrr re: an advert I just saw

thats awful "make great christmas present or pet". totally irresponsible of the seller to put this, makes people think they can be kept like a cat or dog! which site is this on, maybe we can complain and get the advert off!

yeah, I reported it anyway ;) may not do anything but at least I tried! it's sad because the welfare of those ponies could be seriously compromised, and I guess the worst bit is that it's not like this advert is in any way unique.

Awesome- DoneDeal just responded to my complaint:

"Thank you for letting me know about this. I have removed the ad from DoneDeal.

Please let me know if you spot any other strange ads."

Glad they took it seriously enough to remove it.

Seriously if that is the worst ad you have ever seen on done deal then you are very very lucky, there is much worse to complain about.

Don't want it to come accross as I condone such ads but there is much worse than that

^^^ this, I'm sad to say, is very very true :(

When I opened this thread and saw the OP my first thought was "well you'd better not look on donedeal then :("

My advice would be not to then - especially around Feb time when the in foal mares that have had no feed all winter and you can see every rib start being put on.

Or the two year olds that are being ridden or the ones on now that are very light going into winter dispite the summer grass

The list is endless - and to be fair, ok they were advertised as Christamas presents, but what horsey young girl doesn't pray for a pony as a Christmas present (i know i did for many years!), and lets face it it doesn't really matter what time of year anything is bought or sold - if its going to a dud home then its going to a dud home - period

ETA or the ads on most days for "factory horses wanted"

I'm sorry, I didn't realise this thread was a critique of my ability to find adverts that cause concern?

I simply posted one advert that I came across today. It peed me off, so I posted it here.

I do not go through every single advert.

Oh good grief, calm down, we are agreeing with you (well I am, and I think Cronkmooar is too). We are just saying that there are zillions of these advertisers out there, and yes, it is awful :(

Of course, and I'm glad you all (seem to) agree, but I don't see the point in "well if this is the worst.."- of course there are far worse cases, my searches are fairly limited. I'm not even in the right country anyway!

Does anyone know if donedeal is free to advertise on? Do you think that these free advertising websites contribute to the problem? I've also seen a few recently, people looking to loan out their horses over the winter due to their own inadequate facilities.. that also drives me slightly mad

The point I am making is that if this is the worse ad you have come across from Ireland you are lucky and because you have not seen the worst it is really making a fuss about not a lot!

There are much worse and in the grand scale of things this was not the best advert to get het up about - when you have a spare 1/2 hour go through what is on there - at least 20 pages EVERY day.

No it is not free but it is only Euro 3 per ad that you can pay by card or on your phone bill so objecting to the ad's isn't really going to have too much effect - as you have seen, and I for one would rather a pony go as a Christmas present and be adored than left to stave where it is because someone objected to the words Christmas present in an ad

I really don't think you can say that because I objected to someone selling irresponsibly that a pony is going to starve..

I was concerned about the kind of buyer this sort of advert would attract. I do not go through every single advert on the site on a daily basis. I look at one area, because I'm curious about prices, what there is available, etc etc, basically because I'm nosy. My main grievance is with the irresponsible selling- of course there are probably a number of horsy families considering a pony as a Christmas present, but specifically stating that sets off alarm bells in my head..

I'm with you Sheep. The wording is irresponsible, well done for complaining and well done to the site for acting.

We can't police every buyer and seller but reporting irresponsible adverts is a responsible thing to do. I don't understand why Sheep is getting a hard time.

Saying if that is the worst you have seen you are lucky is pointless, why denigrate someone's effort to report irresponsible behaviour? Why not be supportive? If we all report adverts that we see that are irresponsible and the websites act on them then there may be a bit of action from sellers (probably not much but you can hope).

Would it not have been more positive, encouraging and helpful to have responded by saying well done for reporting this advert, this site is terrible they have loads of horrible ads. Rather than trying to make the OP look stupid.

At the end of the day if the removal of the Christmas marketing angle means that this ad doesn't come up in searches for christmas presents then that is good for the ponies. Of course they may still be bought by fools or incompetants but rewording the advert does at least reduce the chances of them being bought as a christmas present to be chucked out with the rubbish when the turkey leftovers are finished.

This site confuses me sometimes..... which is more important, the welfare of the ponies and getting the message out there about responsible advertising/selling or making yourself look smart by belittling the efforts of another member?
