Couldn't believe it today!!! At yard this afternoon and saw a group of five people come down the road past the yard. All looked very well-to-do and respectable, except with them was a young child of about 9 riding a shetland bareback, with no bridle just headcollar. Not so bad, but he had NO hat on and was in camouflage clothes. It was a dull day today and the lanes around the yard are narrow and with no visibility due to high hedges.

Second incident. My friend (Cobrastyle on HHO) hacked my mare out with me on foot later on. We were coming up to a blind bend when my mare started spooking a bit at a gateway. A 4x4 came flying around the bend and I immediately asked her to slow down, as well as Cobrastyle asking too. She didn't slow down at all until she was right next to us, and then actually stopped, wound her window down and started hurling abuse about how it's a country lane etc etc. She then shockingly said in response to me saying that my horse was on the road - that she had horses too!!!!!!! Then to make it even worse, when I told her that she should know not to speed past horses (particularly those that are clearly spooking and near a blind bend), she reversed fast back towards my horse and Cobrastyle (who was still trying to keep my mare calm and get her back towards the outside of the road) and stopped feet away from her back end. Then she slammed her door (which she had opened - presumably to get out) and sped off!

Sorry - ranting!!! But can't believe someone who has horses themselves could be so unsympathetic and irresponsible.

If your horse is spooky, (at gateways) is it wise for you to be hacking on country lanes/round blind bends?
No excuse for bad drivers but if it's a blind bend she wouldnt have seen you nor been speeding to be able to stop next to you - sounds exaggerated to me!

Good catch :D

Stage 1 – Poster climbs onto high moral ground, starts their computer and writes a new thread on a forum using a picture/ video/ article and offers their opinion. Lets call this person the “Incendiary Device In Online Time” or IDIOT for short.

Stage 2 - Other people comment in a horrified and encouraging way. Examples include “poor horse” “how awful”….lets call them “Get in ON the Act Together” or “GOAT's"

Stage 3 – Another poster arrives and gives the original picture/video/article the benefit of the doubt. Lets call them “Reasonable Equable the Better to Understand Things TogethER ” or REBUTTER

Stage 4 - TROLLs (Tormented Reject Out of Lala Land ) appear and start banging on the bridge that the “GOATS” are crossing

Stage 5 – Other posters get on the bandwagon. Some are Goats, some are Trolls some are Rebutters.

Stage 6 – LURKERS start to break out the popcorn ( Luckily Understand Rebutting Kills Even Reasonable Sensible people, in case you’re wondering ;-) )

Stage 7 – One brave GOAT pokes a TROLL and total anarchy breaks out. Four pages later the IDIOT pretends it never mattered anyway, GOATS then turn on the IDIOT who due to their nature as an Incendiary Device, proceeds to burst into flames and thread approaches the event horizon of Godwins Law.

Stage 8 – Popcorn runs out and everyone, Lurkers, Goats, Trolls and Rebutters wander off to repeat the cycle on another thread.

I think I've just been called a goat lol - I'm now going to lurk. :)

This post just annoys my face!

"It was a dull day today and the lanes around the yard are narrow and with no visibility due to high hedges". 4x4 speeding round blind bends / stopping on blind bends. Spooking horses hacking in the late afternoon. 4x4 reversing back into horse on blind bend whilst horse is spooking at a gateway - gateway on a blind bend!

Good point about the spooking on blind bend. Maybe you are right. I agree it is not the best to hack spooky horses out. Then again, how many horses have NEVER spooked on a hack? I think I should obviously sell my mare, ban Cobrastyle from riding (coz clearly she can't control horses!) and get one that everyone else seems to have on here that never puts a foot wrong anywhere.

I clearly made this post up and YES I must be a troll!

Difference is sweetheart we had hi viz on, hats and were riding in proper tack. By the way - we both survived!!! I think I may just get the council to re-jig the roads though to remove the bends. My first post was about the lack of hat, 9 yr old child, camouflage clothing. It was still perfectly light when we hacked out - not dark! Just not a good idea to hack out in camouflage in winter with no hat, hi viz and bareback with no saddle!! I'm assuming you have perfect hacking with no bends?!

If the five people with the kid aren't bothered about the situation, I wouldn't waste your energy getting your knickers in a knot about it when its not your problem.

Catch 22 really. Roads aren't safe for horses anymore, but we don't want to face it because the alternative of not riding on the roads sucks as its so limiting. I usually try to time passing gateways with a gap in traffic as my horse spooks. There's not much more you can do really as we can't control traffic, except maybe buy brain dead, twenty year old horses that have lived all their lives beside the M6? Horses and traffic don't belong together and I'm intrigued to see what happens in years to come regarding riding on the roads..

Oh - forgot to add - MY POST SAYS WE WERE COMING UP TO A BEND - NOT AT THE BEND. Therefore the woman had come around the blind bend at flat out speed, seen us asking her to slow down and then carried on towards us. Doesn't take Einstein to read does it?!

How fast is flat out speed? Because I don't know of any 4x4 that can turn a blind bend and not end up on it side at full speed? And then be able to stop immediately.

And technically SWEETHEART they did not speed past you because you state that she slowed down and then stopped.

You contradict yourself!!

Doseymare - you haven't seen me rushing to the yard when mum phones to say somethings up with the colt, turns out he was flat out sleeping and it was 4am...

I genuinely did not know my truck could do those speeds on those roads!

Back to a serious note though, I would have simply read her number plate out to her and (if she really was as dangerous.as you say) report her for threatening behaviour and made sure her YO thought of her approach to country lane driving....

You clearly can't read properly - I said she sped up to us and didn't stop until she was NEXT to us. In these wonderful days of motoring people have very effective brakes you know!!! ;)

Report her to police*

Would have made sure her yard owner was aware of her country lane driving manner*

I really should be asleep!

Unfortunately we didn't in the heat of the moment catch her plate number. It was such a dicey situation that my friend was too busy sorting my horse out and I was too busy watching what traffic may be coming. The fact that this person felt the need to reverse back towards my horse as it was spooking and near a blind bend was pretty frightening to say the least. But my friend and I were saying after that we wished we had got her plate number. :(

Me too, have to be up for work in 5 hours! Apologies if none of this makes sense :D

I am the aforementioned jockey that rode Moomin's mare. Her mare is a bit spooky on the road, but safe enough - all talk, no action.
We were approaching a bend in the road, and the mare had taken a dislike to something in the house on said bend. Happens, horses spook at everything! She'd been calm until then.

Landrover was approaching at national speed limit - fair enough, it is a country lane. I spotted it and waved for it to slow down, as did Moomin.
She didn't, until she was right up to us, then came skidding to a halt. She took great offence at being asked to slow down, and basically told us she was entitled to go above 30mph. Clearly the horse having a bit of a spook was nothing to worry about.
She then defended her driving by admitting she had horses and knew what she was doing!
After a slight altercation with Moomin, she then, without looking, proceeded to reverse into us to have another go! She clearly didn't see me on the, now very panicky, mare reversing on the road.

That's the bit that wound us up! She could see me having trouble, I couldn't be missed as was in hi-viz and white top, and Moomin was in hi-viz trousers. She just took some weird great offence at being asked to slow down?!

It's amazing really, as every other car that passed us treated us like the road users we were, and slowed down and gave us a wide berth, as per the highway code.

No exaggerations on mine or Moomin's part, it happened, honest guv!

Important thing is that we were all ok, but it's frustrating to say the least!

Hope that clears it all up a bit for those who are a bit concerned :) x

Woman driver sounds like a stressed out fruitcake. Just be glad your encounter with her lasted just a few moments.

Feel sorry for the poor guy who married her.

PS, have you been upsetting some people on here by expressing an opinion that differed from theirs or is there just a lot of PMT about right now ?

I think I may just get the council to re-jig the roads though to remove the bends.................QUOTE]

As requested, re-jigged road for you ;):)

Swap you a bend any time, this damn road (aka country lane, is dirt - hard top stops at the intersection) is like this for 10 kms, straight roads, no hedges either, may be safe to ride on but they are Boring!!!!!!!!!:)

Drivers are obliged to drive in a manner which means they can stop within the distance they can see. Which means on blind bends, SLOW.

Leave the OP alone, this woman driver behaved appallingly and next time it could have resulted in serious injury.

Horses and pedestrians are classed as vulnerable road users and drivers are mandated to give them special caution when passing them. They are specifically told that horses may at unpredictably and that they should expect that and drive accordingly.

Banning horses from the roads would be pointless as it would then lead to demands for cyclists and pedestrians to be banned too!

Please report this incident OP on the BHS register. And hopefully next time (if there is one), get the plate and report this menace to the police so she can be given a warning.

Omg, why does every post have to turn into an argument these days!!

I had dealing with a woman with ridiculous road rage because I told her her indicator was broken. She soon buggered off when I just kept quiet & took a photo of her number plate - try that next time!! xxx

So Dosymare how to I teach my rising 4 year old about the outside world if I can't hack him out. He's not a spooky type but he is a baby and so could spook at something new that he's notet before!

My two pence worth;

I don't wear hi viz, nor do I proceed to make a big fuss about asking cars to slow down if heaven forbid, I SEE one using the same area of road as me at the same time, I trust my horse and I trust the driver has enough basic intelligence (probably in 90% of cases) to not want to have an accident, clearing splattered horse or rider off their car would be a huge inconvenience, so continue as normal...almost as if I were on a bicycle using the road. Not too far out to be a pain in the ass, not shrinking into the kerb because I'm frightened.

I have never had a real issue with sharing road space, and have ridden in a number of counties on various roads. I attribute that to my attitude whilst on the road - I'm not rude, I'm not nervous, I'm not frightened, I'm just another road user and seem to be respected as that.

I also don't have the energy to get my knickers in a twist if a driver dares proceed past me at a speed higher than I would ideally choose, there's no point. I do thank all drivers who display courteous driving however. It's not rocket science.

I also acknowledge sometimes accidents happen, and sadly, we will never be able to stop every road accident, be it with another car, a horse, a motorbike, a cyclist etc. Getting shirty about every encounter you preciously describe as a 'near miss' (it's probably more accurately described as a 'far miss'...) is only going to irk drivers further. I know as a rider and driver there is nothing more infuriating than a sanctimonious bright yellow goon crying about my driving skills!!
