I have just been sent this message about my 4 year old that I have for sale that has just started BSJA. . . . . . .

***************************************************************

Hi there

just emailing about the 16.1 4yr old mare you have for sale.

Is she honest? has she ever refused? is she spooky? go off any stride?

How big have you jumped her at home and at a show?

**************************************************************

Are people really that stupid that they would expect a 4 year old to be treated in this manner ??
I wouldn't sell my youngster to soemone like this if I didn't have a penny left to my name!

This was my reply . . . .

Hello,

Yes, she is extreamely honest and defo not a stopper but we do not set our youngsters up to fail by jumping them off dodgy strides or overfacing them over huge jumps either at home or at shows sorry.
She does however easily jump the classes suitable to her age and level of training which are British Novice & Discovery.

Yes, she does spook at times because she is only 4 years old and has only been broken for 8 months !!

I think you would be better off with a schoolmaster but thanks for your message.

Regards

i think the 'go off any stride' comment is wanting a bit much from a 4yo, but i dont think the others are unreasonable questions if im honest.

Hahaha love those emails!! My friend has her 4yr old for sale and her answer I can imagine would be along the lines of:
Shes 4 so I dont know but she tries her hardest, hasnt refused out, has her 4 double clears BN, came 8th at the Discovery out of 53 and she jumps when I tell her to. As for spooky shes 4.... so not really but who knows if she will change in time!
Jumped 1m at a show and 1.30 at home.
(Then you would get the...) What level are you riding at, how experienced are you, what is your plan with her etc?

People asking those questions have got to be mental!! Mabye you should email back with "I think a 8 year old may be better suited to you :p"

see i think it is okay to ask those questions so long as you dont expect the answers to be:

yes totally honest, never stopped and never would.
No she is never spooky.
Shes jumped 1.20 at shows and 1.40 at home

etc... they may be genuine people and just interested in your response to gauge how honest she is, and what her attitude is like

I can beat that, when selling a two year old PRE colt to make 15.3, I had two people ask me 'what training has he had?' the first was a woman looking for something for her 8yo to ride  the second was a woman looking for something for her husband to learn on!

Needless to say, I suggested to both that a youngster was not the ideal for a novice, bloody woman with the husband argued with me, I had to be really firm with her that this was not the horse for her

Good one Snowy! Yep, this horse has also got her double clears and placed at a premier show !!

BBRocky - 'genuine people just interested in your response to gauge how honest she is' or not I wouldn't let these muppets anywhere near my horse!!

I advertised a yearling, bred for affilated level. Got what sounded like 12 year old on the phone asking if she was good to hack out & if she jumped. Said nicely this wasn't the horse for her.......

TBH I don't think it's unreasonable. Could have been phrased better. But I would like to know if the horse is honest (it is a simple enough question), particularly spooky (there are quiet horses and there are spooky horses..) and whether she has to be set up or will take a long or short one where necessary. And how big she's jumped-again perfectly reasonable to know what stage the horse is at??
At the end of the day you are selling this horse, this person wants this information, and I ca't see what your problem is with it?
