Being a driving enthusiast I regularly visit driving horses for sale sites and get angry at some of the ads. Only today I saw one for a 18 month filly who was herself a collection of weak points advertised as having run with an unnamed colt and in foal. The only selling point seemed to be the usual 'dripping with hair' phrase. These types come up far too often for my peace of mind. All that hair can conceal some very bad confirmation faults. And often these animals are shown with a long legged jockey on board who is holding the reins so tight the poor animal has it's nose poked skywards. The dreadful thing is that nearly all these mares and fillies get sold. Even worse is a ewe necked poor looking creature advertised as 'future stallion material'. Not to one of my mares it's not!
There are genuine breeders of good, well put together gypsy horses and ponies and the stock they breed is exceptional. Against them is the back yard breeder who puts any mare in foal to an inferior stallion and sells the resulting foal cheap. Sorry for the rant but I just had to say something because it makes my blood boil!

I think an awful lot are sold on the sympathy vote

If I was so inclined would I want to breed a well put together TB from a well bred mare, paying a stud fee from a decent stallion which then fetches less than £100 as a youngster in a sale

Or would I want to breed a chunky hairy out of a low maintenance easy foaling mare put to her son who for convenience sake lives in the same field, slap someone heavy on its back at 18 months old, preferably pictured with ill fitting tack and in an untidy state and get free advertising on a forum, a huge exposure which I couldnt hope for from the small ads, then a big debate followed by people clamouring to rescue it at £££

Don't you love all those coloured ponies advertised with posts for back legs and "lovely short backs" that you cannot fit a saddle to.
