Grrrr... Turning out, & horse fell over in the field

Put my horse out today, as been in her stable for a few days now, apart from exercise. I greased under her hooves well, and after a few hours out in the paddock I go to get her in, and she came walking towards me then SPLAT....

on the floor she goes in the field...... she is o.k and looked at me to say "what happened there mum, who pushed me!!!!"

My horse has fallen over twice in the last few days

His own fault to be fair, he was chasing another of the horses around the field and both times came to a halt too quickly.

Luckily it was just powder snow though, and him just being an idiot

Same ^ mine havent been out or ridden for a whole week.. the entrance to the yard is just lethal! poor horses, although my food orientated horses seem to be pretty happy! suprising really seeing as they are usually turned out from 9-5 daily!
 
Ours go out every day whatever the weather/conditions. i couldn't keep them in. Two are out 24/7 anyway. The ground underneath is quite rutted and they're not stupid, they don't run about on it.

Sadly can't get out riding though as the roads aren't safe enough and our stables are down a very steep him with a ford at the bottom and it doesn't get gritted so it has been quite annoying as I have just had two days off work with the intention of riding and not been able to do a thing!

turned mine out today, went loopy as been in and one kicked other on the knee- vet is out tomorrow.

the ice has been so bad and even the grass is slippery. then the ground is so frozen and hard i'm so worried about them hammering around on it.

ideally would turn out every day so they are calmer but yard has been too icy and couldn't get to field.

this is horrible weather!!! I don't want a white xmas anymore.
 
got one of mine out for a few hours today - we still have snow on the ground but it was grippy and the ground had softened up some underneath so restricted his field ( leccy fencing is no fun when frozen! ) and popped him out while i mucked out. He did have a hoolie, but mostly behaved himself. hope to get them both out tomorrow though.
 
We're fairly lucky in that although the ground is rock hard, it's not too slippy because it's got a layer of snow that's offering some grip rather than just ice. Most of the horses at the livery yard have been out for at least a few hours over the last few days, except for one incredibly clumsy TB who likes to race around like a loon and would probably break his leg. We have ten of them out 24/7, and not enough stables to bring all of them in, so if the fields did get too bad for turnout we'd be screwed.

Hope your mare is okay and has learned her lesson! She'll probably be more careful in future...
 
Mine has been in for a week as well. We have to go on the road for a little bit to get to our fields and it is just sheet ice. The fields are solid icy snow and the entrance to the yard is terrible. I booted her up to the hilt on Sunday morning to take her round to the menage so she could have a run and roll. She rolled then realised she was on her own and no one else was out and paniced

she was out for about 5 mins. We are hoping that we will be able to get out soon even for a hack around the fields. Mind you the roads around here tonight were lethal,. my traction control was on more than off and I was driving really slowly
 
I find it is best to turn them out every day, regardless of snow and ice. The trouble is, when you leave them in for a few days, they then go extra loopy when you do turn them out, so more likely to do themselves an injury.

totally agree with this, even my dainty TB is out whatever the weather
 
2 of mine are out this winter. field has loads of grass so the gound isnt slippy or really hard
other horse is stabled at night and her field is bare, hard and slippy in places. shes got her shelter with straw and haynet, so she stays in there most of the time and has a wander and sniff with the horses next door.
if they stay in, they go mad the next day... if its icey for a week, even if they go out and the ground is good, they are so loopy they are likely to hurt themselves. daily turnout or freedom of some kind is essential imho.

Not to mention the fact that I've seen a horse go down when it is slippy coz the ground is wet or hard - you'd never chuck them out in this country if you worried about them falling over I reckon!
 
Mine managed to get turned out for all of 20 mins today since friday. We still have a good 5 inches and where it is lower it is ice. I put him out, he dropped to the ground and had a good old roll, stood up, bucked, then stood by the gate to come in with feet completly packed with snow and ice. I have been lucky in that we have been able to keep the walkway to the walker clear so all the horses have managed about an hour a day on that.
 
Mine are out but one isn't in his normal field because the gateway is dreadfully rutted. He's not at all happy with me.
 
I lunge Micah in the indoor before I turned him out yesterday. Today he went out fine, its funny all the way to the field he gives the impression he is going to go mad when you let him go but he doesn't lol
 
Our yard has a steep ramp up to the fields and ponies hadn't been out for a few days but this morning we emptied 3 wheelbarrows full of muck from their boxes up it and made a little track - it worked a treat - gives them a bit of grip at least!
 
I put mine out today as I was worried about her going nuts and falling after being in for two days.

She's very worried about walking on the frozen ruts, so much so she refused to let someone bring her in on Saturday evening, even though it meant being alone in the field till I got there.

Agree with this I turn out everyday no matter what.

We've been turning out every day too. One time of year when having very little concrete has been a major advantage! Have used smaller field nearer stables to avoid trudging up hill with two horses in tow (or towing me!) but they've been out every day. Youngster did fall over the first day tho, came hooleying down the hill, cornered quite well at the bottom then lost all 4 legs in a snowdrift! Landed up his side, scrabbled up and carried on running so hopefully no harm done!

We can't risk it - our yard is like a sheet of ice! Why the farmer doesn't invest in grit I'll never know!

We've tipped all the muck onto the yard to make tracks from every stable to the indoor school, outdoor school and walker. It's worked really well but clearing it up is going to be an awful job. There are 40 boxes and the muck was tipped on the yard for 6 days

Had exactly the same happen to mine today, has been in all week (due to other owners not turning out) and when I turned him out today he turned the corner too tight and slipped rather ungracefully on to the floor!

He will be going out again tomorrow i can't have him in all of the time!!
 
My little driving p9ony fell on his face in the snow today when he was capering up the hill - tripped over a burried branch and went face-ploughing. he was OK and used it as a great excuse to go haring around like a nutter.

Same here...they go out every day so no dramas for them.....no hooning around......they're just pottering about eating hay...all booted and suited.
 
Mine is in, has been since Friday. The snow balls up in her feet, she ends up on stilts, then panics and runs around. If she'd be sensible about it, I'd turn her out. And now the yard is sheet ice and on a hill, so I'm definitely not risking it. She's also nearly 29, and not as supple as she was, so I worry that a small slip could cause her an injury. I'll take the risk if it's just slippery in the field itself, but with 2 steep slopes to contend with, it's not worth it. As soon as it thaws, she'll be going out though, even if it just thaws enough that I can find a safe path up the hills.
