Hello all, I am new here so please bare with me :)
Recently my gelding has been getting very strong and uncontrollable to jump and even sometimes on the flat (but not too often). He is an eventer and I’ve only had him for about 9 months, I have never had a problem before now as he is usually a slow and steady lad but it seems that whenever I jump he throws his head in the air and gallops at the jump or does a weird sideways trot, jumps the jump and then proceeds to do mini bucks after the jump or take off with me. I do not want to put a stronger but in him (as I feel this would worsen the problem or make him mouth dead) or use a powerful calmer as he is already dopey on the flat. Could anyone suggest anything that might help me? This has only occurred in the last 2 weeks really. TIA :)

The first thing to do is get everything checked, it sounds as if he is either uncomfortable which could be teeth, saddle or something else physical or that it is just the time of year and he is feeling fresh although to me as it has only just started it is most likely he has changed shape over the winter or dropped some topline and jumping is making the saddle uncomfortable which is not such an issue on the flat.

All the checks, then instructor. Hes maybe just getting to keen and point and shoot, so when vet checks are clear work on getting him to not focus on the jump but listening to you.
