Ive got a very moody mare on my yard who is now in foal. She is very possessive of her space and is quite aggressive. Does anyone know if being in foal will calm her moods or make her worse? I dont want anyone to get injured! Im afraid for her foal when it finally arrives next year. any help would be appreciated

Thank you

Lou

Mine is a cow while in foal but a superb mum, she returns to normal when baby is on the ground, and is quite happy to share baby with me.

My mare was quite stroppy until i put her in foal. She is not due till june but has turned into a rather laid back mare, she still gets a bit grumpy but nothing like she was before.

Mine was a sweet tempered mare but she didn't really have much time for me - I was just the person who fed her and she never really connected with me. She'd had several homes by this point.

Then when she went into foal she suddenly started whickering and nudging me, running her nose all over my arms, and then calling out frantically if I moved out of sight. Think it was all her hormones getting her ready to respond and stimulate the foal. She had a long birth and the vet had to help so she didn't take to him initially, but within a few hours the hormones had kicked in again and then she was fantastic.

Hopefully your mare will be fine but you can always contact the National Foaling Bank for advice if she doesn't take to the foal. They are fantastic for practical help, better than the vet who came out.

Pregnant lady! Who can tell what they will do.

I have three here and one has remained exactly the same, the other has got a deeper voice and is very herd orientated whereas she was a bit of a loner before, and the last has turned into a raging bully! All that, of course, could merely be coincidental.
