Anyone ever had this? Giving the lame one some bute to try and help him and he’s suddenly got so mean. He’s always resource guarded food but now I’m wondering if the bute is actually irritating his stomach? Ulcers? He’s a retired grass kept pony. Loads to eat but since giving him a mug of balancer a day wit a sachet of bute he’s pulling some evil faces! The mud looks horrendous but it’s really not deep. Only hoof depo and only around gateway. Seven acres of dry.

He's in pain PP.. from ulcers potentially, or the bute isn't quite cutting it with his other issues.
I would get the vet out and discuss, you won't know which it is unless you scope him I suppose. They may be able to prescribe you another painkillers, but I'm not sure which ones aren't bad for the stomach

I had one I could not give bute to, it went straight to his stom and he started kicking and bucking. I have heard of others. I'm sorry to hear this PP, I thought you had found an answer for Quin for a while :(

He’s such a tricky pony.
makes me laugh he was my hardy native retirement present! After a fab but often lame warmblood I thought he was going to be so easy ???

A friend has hers on previcox & paracetamol, I presume for a similar reason. May be worth asking if you could try similar or danilon is supposed to be slightly easier on the gut as well

Horses with gut issues shouldn't be put on bute, it's very harsh for the stomach and people really need to understand that.
Ask for drug alternative such as EQUIOXX or natural NSAID such as devil's claw.
Vets really shouldn't prescribe bute when horses already have bad stomach/gut issues as it's been proven to have bad side effects on the ulcers and have a very short window of effect, thus the double dose
