I was out with a gang of horsie friends last night and i was talking to them about moving from DIY to 5 day full livery and we got onto the subject of yard owners.... I heard about one old chap who ruled his yard with a rod of iron, he would turn lights off on you if he thought they were not needed, would not let you wash horses legs or soak hay and was not only rude and gave his opinion on everything but also used to insult his clients by telling them that they were stupid horse people, and they were not customers they were leaches !! - anyone ever been on a yard like this - must admit i dont think i would have lasted a day before being thrown off!!

I was at livery at a showjumper's yard. He once walked into my horse's stable to skip out while I was there and said to the horse: "**** off, you **** livery"

He was the grumpiest so-and-so ever!

My old yard was run by someone like that - she was really old school and i think she had become so fed up over the years with novice horse people going the wrong way about things and the horse suffering she just became intolerable. She would stand by the school without you knowing she was there and start swearing and shouting at people riding that they were idiots and should learn to ride. She used to call people cu**s if they did anything she didnt approve of and god help anyone that popped to the yard in the wrong footwear! She used to like the horses being in early in the day and even though i paid her to turn out somedays she would decide my horse could do with staying in. Needless to say im not stabled there anymore.

Booboos - no way !! i would have been mortified - did you stay there for much longer after this?

He was horrible, but his wife was lovely and she mainly dealt with liveries, gave lessons, etc. He used to walk down the yard and all the horses' ears would go flat back - they all hated him!

I managed 3 years there, then they sold the place.

I have just escaped from a yard with grumpiness in the yard management, i feel like a massive cloud has been lifted from over me and although havent made many friends at my new yard yet can feel that atmosphere is so much better. I feel like i have my horse back now :-)

its amazing how many YO's are like this. maybe the power goes to their head.

My past yard used to be bloody abusive at times. the YO treated us basically like staff, expected everything her own way and shout, swore and made your life hell if you ever challenged anything. you would never ever think we were actually paying customers the way she spoke to us.

Its not right and i don't think anybody should put up with it, there's plenty of decent yards and yard owners out there.

Having been on both sides, you do need to understand that sometimes it hard to be happy and cheery all time, especially when a livery bangs on your door during your dinner time to demand that fluffy has a different rug on tomorrow, when a note would have been sufficient and you have been on the yard since 6am! However, rudeness is not acceptable in any form and I have left yards were the YM appeared to have so little interest in the horses and their welfare that it was unbelieveable that they worked with horses at all and woe betide if you accutually wanted to pay her to do something for you.
