My mare grunts all the time, when walking. She does it both in hand and when ridden. Its like she is grunting to clear her nose but does it all the way around. I think its a contented grunt and certainly not from pain. But is does make me giggle.
Anyone else with a grunting horse?

my new loan horse grumbles and groans! does it when ridden, not all the time, but sometimes he does it- i liken it to him grumbling and moaning like the old man he is ( 22yrs old) found it odd at first but kinda used to it now

Yup I have had several
One went though life with an impresstive range of grunts squeaks and squeals the under the breath squeal was warning of imminent deployment of the ejector seat he was very naughty.
My dressage horse grunts it means he's working hard often in time with the steps in trot .

Mine does it in trot, was rather surprised when he started it - not had him long. People when they first meet him laugh, I think it's quite sweet.

Mine does a great seal impression; normally, it's either when we are on the way home hacking or when we are schooling and doing something he doesn't find as fun (he likes trotting especially, so it tends to be in walk or canter). Very strange little horse. The noises are often followed by a smile (his, not mine)
