The divinely beautiful large GSD dog I have seen wandering round my estate has turned out to be......

A BITCH! :eek:

I met a lady who gave my two some fish and started chatting about her GSD, a gobby long hair who I hide from when I see him! And we got onto the subject of beautiful, loyal, wonderful large GSD who I see round and about with her aged owner!

It's only her dog's littermate and a GIRL! Woe! But evidence that, personality, the way you bring them up and outside influences can count for a lot even with littermates!!!

There are just as many puppies, who are made or marred, within the first 16 weeks of life, as there are those affected by inspired or thoughtless breeding, I think!

I usually check (by sight, obviously) for the presence of a sheath before I make an assumption one way or another :p especially after I confused Laura Wheeler's OH's dog for a bitch :p I've offended too many people by taking the height or strength of head as a failsafe :p

As you can probably guess, there is a size problem with the breed, they're not meant to be giants!
 
If it makes you feel any better K, I used to show a bitch who I admit had a strong head. At a local all breeds open show she went BoB and went into the BIS ring. The judge, an experienced all rounder, went over all the dogs and awarded BIS to a very pretty spaniel. He then came over and presented BoS (Best opposite sex) to my girl. I'm not sure to this day what he found when he checked her for entirety but it certainly wasn't a pair of balls.:confused: I didn't let on because it was a very nice rosette.:p
Re the size, I did a follow up visit on a rehomed GSD this week, and she was the biggest long coat bitch I have ever seen, not helped by being overweight as the poor girl hadn't been walked in ages, but I reckon she must have been about 32" at the shoulder.:eek:
 
Kitty, I just googled Keano (you knew I would have to) and he is the dead spit of my old Chaka (Buffys mum). I could almost guess his breeding before I looked, and sure enough he carries several lines (possibly too many too close imho) to Chakas dad, so yes can imagine he would be a big lad, but very handsome.
 
Aye, there are plenty at the upper height limit in the ring Kitty, has been like that for a while. Just depends who else is in the class and what faults they have!
It's like everything else, you breed from a dog with one missing teeth, a couple of generations along you have dogs with three missing teeth, you breed from big dogs, how big will they end up getting? But it sure ain't the worst issue!
(I say that as the owner of an elephant!)
 
Doesn't really work like that, the thing to do is to use a correct size male or female that is bred from correct size lines in the hope the pups will follow the pattern. Evie is top size and if I mate her I will be looking for a dog that is correct middle size and bred that way. Unfortunately that rules out a lot of the GSD males around at the moment.:(
 
Yep, agree, B's sire was at the top limit, his mother is a nice medium size, I have an elephant and a midget, breeding is rarely the best of both and can skip a generation too, it needs to take place over generations to see any real long-term improvement.
There are such dogs as 'size correctors' but what will probably happen as in years gone by, is that they will just up the height limit!
