Guard dog that doesn't shed (too much) - any ideas?!

Evening all,

We're looking to get a new dog. We would like something that will be off-putting to burglars (!) as our lab is completely useless in that regard, despite a ferocious bark. We'd really love a GSD but understand they're even worse for shedding than labs. Have promised OH I'll do some research into the topic so here I am :)

So question is, are there any dogs that can help guard the house/yard that don't shed too much? Or alternatively, can any GSD lovers reassure me that they're not too gross indoors - our lab sheds for England despite my attempts at regular brushing!!

Thanks!

Dobermans are single coated, Ive got 2 and they just need a quick brush once a week and I dont hoover every day either, good house dogs as well and always let me know if anyone is around.

Territorial springers. I have two and they are extremely loud. Want them?

What type of property do you have? Would the dog be loose? Would it be primarily for guarding or a pet? Rottweilers are gorgeous, short hair, but can look fierce. The kennel I use has a rescue one and he came pelting over to me: I was brave and stood there whilst quaking in my boots!

I think ultimately, you need something that barks as opposed to a big fierce dog which could lead to problems. Any dog can be taught to bark and 'guard'.

Ajredale terriers don't shed, have a big bark and can be trained as guard dogs (used to be police dogs back in the day too!) or you could go for size and get a black russian terrier - bigger black version of an airedale, massive dogs :-) can be trained to harness too ;-)

Thanks for all the suggestions. Yes, we want something that makes a noise rather than scares people. Will look into all these :)

If you have your heart set on a GSD (and they are awesome watchdogs as well as great friends!) then you could look at the longhaired variety. I have two longcoats as well as a standard-coated working line and the short coat sheds lots more than the two longies put together. The only problem with a longcoat is that they need more grooming (to avoid tangles and matts) than the standard coats.

If you want a dog that doesn't shed don't get a longhaired GSD - I take a carrier bag off mine a day, 2+ when she is shedding :(

That is really interesting Fides. My two have incorrect coats though and do not have an undercoat. I am guessing your longcoat does?

Have to say, I've found the same as CC and Moobli in that the short heavy coated GSDs have always shed more than our long haired GSDs.

Doberman was the first breed I thought of on reading your post OP.
