Does anyone know of anywhere in the yorkshire area that deals with dogs suitable to be guard dogs on a yard?

Sadly our yard dog has been PTS and we are looking for another one. Wanting to stay away from pure GSD.

Does anyone know of any rescues that deal with them?

Thanks

What facilities do you have for these dogs?
There is a huge difference between a yard dog that has a comfy house & run and then has an enclosed yard next to a house after closing to being on a chain or in a pen or away from a residence.

As S4S says, the idea that the dog will be stuck out on a chain all day and night with no other company/stimulation, or shut in a car yard etc, is the reason that rescues do not rehome dogs as guards, so it is easier to issue a blanket ban.

Its on a yard with no house free run of the fully enclosed yard through the day someone is always on the yard in the day. Then on a night will be on a long chain with a warm kennel. I do understand totally what you are saying i hate seeing dogs just stuck on a chain however this dog and the previous two have never been those sort of dogs.

Actually it is illegal to have a guard dog on premises with no one present.
No rescue will allow you to get a dog to put on chain and anyway what is the point of having a chained dog as a guard?

Just wanted to share these photos of tara our last guard dog

Had no idea it was illegal will get friend (owner of the yard ) to look into it thank you.

The chain and kennel is by the front gate and front of the stables the chain has the full run or the front of the yard. Reason why it is chained is because no one is there, as i said the yard is fully enclosed but if it was ever broken into the dog would be on a chain so it could not get out however still have the ability to protect the stable from its long chain.

Just had a quick look at the the guard do act 1975 can i just ask if the dog is chained up on a night like i said above is that ok?

The dog must be under the control of the handler at all times except when it is secured so it is not able to go freely around the premises.

Thanks

1 Control of guard dogs.

(1)A person shall not use or permit the use of a guard dog at any premises unless a person (“the handler”) who is capable of controlling the dog is present on the premises and the dog is under the control of the handler at all times while it is being so used except while it is secured so that it is not at liberty to go freely about the premises.
(2)The handler of a guard dog shall keep the dog under his control at all times while it is being used as a guard dog at any premises except—
(a)while another handler has control over the dog; or
(b)while the dog is secured so that it is not at liberty to go freely about the premises.
(3)A person shall not use or permit the use of a guard dog at any premises unless a notice containing a warning that a guard dog is present is clearly exhibited at each entrance to the premises.

Read the full section. The act is a bit ambiguous but "A person shall not use or permit the use of a guard dog at any premises unless a person (“the handler”) who is capable of controlling the dog is present on the premises" comes before the bit about another handler or secured.

I did read the full thing and i asked a simple question, i quoted the question i wanted answering. Thanks for your help. It also says

dog is under the control of the handler at all times while it is being so used except while it is secured so that it is not at liberty to go freely about the premises.

to me that reads if its secure on the premises that's fine, will pass it on to the owner of the yard seems strange that we have always had dogs on the yard and never had any problem from the police or dog warden who we have regular contact with ie call to the yard for a cuppa or chat ( mutual friend )

They may not be aware of the act but I'm sure the insurance company will be. Are they aware the dog is there when YO is not?
A chained dog on the premises is asking for trouble if children ( bless them) get in while no one is there.

No rescue will allow a dog out to be chained.

Sadly "Compound Dogs " were made illegal after kids got bit being where they should`nt have been. The long chain is legal,as is a handler present.I would suggest to look for likely dogs in the Patrol and Protection Dog forum,or simply ask around for a misfit dog who has bitten a neighbour, one of mine is such a one.
At one end of the scale are expensive trained dogs..at the other dogs who owners are glad to see the back of;it would need to be a hardy coated breed to live out happily in winter. Also try Epupz/Gumtree for private ads.
Ridiculous in my opinion that we are no longer allowed to protect our own property,in theory anyway. Most work bred farm collies are pretty handy too..and most farmyards have those around.

This link might be helpful http://www.inbrief.co.uk/animal-law/guard-dogs-and-the-law.htm

especially this part,

"What premises are covered by the Act?
The Act covers buildings as well as land including parts of buildings, other than dwelling houses.

The Act does not apply to agricultural land and land within the cartilage of a dwelling house."

I'm not sure if stables are classed as agricultural land, might be worth investigating?:)

Thank you very much, will def look more into this. In fact i know they are trying to get planning for a house so will get the owner to look more into it and find out if the yard comes under the buildings.
As i said above a dog has always been on the yard and people know about her and nothing has ever been said.
Thanks again everyone.
