I've always used weigh tapes for the horses come worming time and just added ~50kg to make sure i wasn't under worming. Had the opportunity to use a weigh bridge yesterday and was surprised at the result.
Here is the pony - approx 14.3hh (give or take an inch!)
What do people expect him to weigh?

480.
My vet weighed my 3 in the week. He was pleased with my weigh tape (Dodson and horrell) as it made them just 20kg lighter than their actual weight.
He said that was the most accurate tape he had encountered and others were weighing horses on average 70kg too little!!

I had 2 weight tapes (gave one away) but one weighs under by about 25kg, the other over by about the same amount. I think the key is to know how far out whichever you have is, then adjust for it.

There's a calculation that you can use that combines measurement round the barrel with length and height which is surprisingly accurate, came within 5kg of 3 horses I used it on that had been on a weightbridge.

weightaped this morning to check again - pony sided 404kg, horse side 421kg... actual weight on weighbridge 443kg!
very interesting reading people's guesses! I was certain his weightape measurement had been 440kg (pre weighing on the bridge) but think that must be one of my other horses.

At our vets when every horse arrives they are put on the scales & weighed. They are then weight taped & the difference is noted. They have had anything up to 100kgs out when weight taped. They did this as a bit of a survey & basically give out the advice that the weight tape is only good to use to give a rough idea if your horse has increased in weight or not & not to be relied on as anything like accurate. :)

My mare weigh tapes the same as she weighs. It's the first time I've known a tape to be so accurate. She must have very average proportions.

My pony was 450kg on weigh tape last Summer but then 529kg on weighbridge! She is 14.2 Irish cob but looks more like section D. She was Eventing fit too! So weigh tapes don't work for mine!
