Took my 'unhackable horse' hacking in 2000 acres of forest and survived!
Delicia is a high spirited mare who has draged me through hedges backwards, thrown herself down ditches and tanked off with me on major roads. She was too dangerous to hack at our old yard so she didnt hack. Ever.
I thought this was unacceptable that at 9 years old she had been having 7 times. Recently i moved yards and with it came the possibility of hacking in the glorious Bedgebury Forest. An area of stunning natural beauty, deer, deadly squirrals and cyclists/loose dogs galor!
So today was Dee day (see what i did there? arent i clever!), and i tacked her up, schooled her for about 20 minutes to make sure she was listening...well, this was my idea. However, the jumps were still out from jumping yesterday and delicia desided the giant mushrooms and bunnies were really really uber scarey pony eaters! Actually it served as a good schooling session as she desensitised to it. Very pleased.
My poor mother who is recovering from broncitis was too nervous to let me and Dee go on our own, but as her knee is not brilliant she couldnt ride herself, so decided to walk behind us the entire way.
I am used to dee passaging, leaping about, spinning and rearing on the roads...but....she was so relaxed. She took a deep breath, i gave her her head and we walked the whole way, no jogging, no being a prat.
I am thrilled! It always bugged me that dee never really left the arena, as that isnt why i bought a horse. I had one of the best hacks i have ever had on my horse and i really felt at one with her.
This is what horse ownership is about, it isnt about winning red ribbons, but about exploring new avenues and enjoying every step of the way.
I love my horse of a lifetime so much! So if anyone is near bedgebury and wants a hacking partner....count us in!
So pictures and videos to prove that we did it! (please bear in mind I have tonsillitis and a glove in my mouth so I can ride and work my phone at the same time, which is why I sound like a demented chipmunk!
