I will be moving my horse to livery soon for the first time ever, and would like some assistance on the paper-work side of things!

What's the standard arrangement at a professional livery facility:
Do you pay a deposit?
Do you sign a contract?
Do livery yards require horses to be insured for public liability and suchlike?

Any help and advice much welcomed!

Thanks all

when I was on full livery we had to pay a month in advance. They didnt request insurance but my horse was insured anyhow.

DIY was pretty much the same - month in advance and insurance isnt complusary.

The yard should be insured as far as i am aware if anyone claimed etc.

I think all yards are different when it comes to paperwork...

My first yard had no contract, no requirement for insurance and very limited rules. I paid one months deposit which was returned to me when i left.

The second yard was a very strict which included a contract which listed all the yard rules...one of the rules was "at no time is there to be straw or bedding to be visible on he yard!!!" and another was that the yard owner had permission to sell your horse to cover all livery costs and expenses if you owed more than one months rent!!!!
You had to be insured buy either NFU or Petplan with up to 3 million liability insurance
I also paid 1 months rent up front but had to give a months notice so that deposit was your notice covered...if that makes sense?
Lets just say i didn't stay there long!!!!

The yard I'm on now has no contract but a list of reasonable rules to follow, they take your contact details for file and emergencies, They ask for your horse to be insured but it's up to you who you go with or the level of cover.
Downside is you have to buy your hay, haylege from them and although you can go on any bedding you want if your on straw you have to buy it from them. You also have to buy your wormer from them.
I just had to pay that months rent up front but no deposit. So if i leave (won't be in the foreseeable future as i love it there) I have until the end of the month to leave.

It also depends on what type of livery your going on and what they will be doing for you.

If your getting them to do things for you or your having things included in your livery costs then it may be prudent to get it in writing.
As for insurance again it depends on your yard rules or personal preference. I personally would never own a horse without insurance because i couldn't afford to pay out for an accident caused by my horse or the huge vet bills if anything goes wrong. But each to their own.

Good luck with the move

Agree that all yards are different. My yard, a contract has to be signed on arrival of horse, which has to be insured and fully vaccinated, wormed on arrival and fall in with yard's worming schedule. Pay livery month in advance, but no deposit and if want to leave one months notice has to be given, plus YO can give a months notice if they want you off yard. Normal yard rules apply which is more to do with H&S rather than YO i.e. hats to be worn when riding etc.

Hope all goes well with the move

All yards are different. My yard=no rules :s However if there are any big problems a owner can be asked to leave, it#s all very informal.

And I regularly pay half a month late (having driven around with £100 in an envelope for a few weeks...oops!)
