guinea pigs claws?

Taking our piggies to the vets to get their claws clipped costs about £20 per pig so is it okay if I clip their claws with a pair of strong nail clippers??

and is it best to keep way from the pinkish bit??

It's fine to clip them yourself, like you say just use strong nail clippers (dog ones are best) also recommended to have some wound powder handy in case you cut the quick. It is best to try not to cut too near the quick(pink bit) though. Oh and hold them quite firmly too, cos they're wriggly little sods!!

I have always clipped my guineapigs and rabbits myself up until now. Henry (a rabbit) has completely black claws and i dont trust myself to not cut them too short. Luckily, he wears them down pretty well running around, but i still get the vet to do them at his annual vaccination appointment.

If your guineas have got clear claws and you can see the red ("the pinkish bit" - blood), then i dont see why you cant do them yourself - it is easier with 2 people though - one to hold the guine and one to clip. I use dog nail clippers on mine as human ones aren't strong enough.

Oh, and point the clippers either up or down when clipping, and not sideways or you might split the claw.

thankfully my piggies don't actaully qrigglethat much. they're used to me checking their teeth and holding them lots so shouldn't be too muych of a task!! *touchwood*

Iv always done my piggies claws too. I bought a small pair of nail clippers ( they look like sissors but with a round bit in the blades ) from pets at home for about £5.
