I was told that a good way of getting weight on my mare, was to add guiness to her dinner  I'm pretty sure that can't be right, but thought I'd ask you lot about your thoughts on it :)

Prob would as alcohol is quite high in cals, wouldn't be my chosen method though! Like speedibeet and microionized linseed myself!

It gives them an iron boost, my horse loves it.

There is no quick way...but I have been told to give mine milk powder (the stuff you give orphaned foals)

My Grandfather used to feed sweetheart stout and a raw egg to his show ponies a couple of weeks before the shows! Was supposed to give them extra weight and give shine to there coats!
They certainly did look the part and were always in the ribbons!

Although i am sure that now that feed specialists will have something against it!

This person also said about the raw eggs! I'd never heard of these methods before, but was interested to see if they actually work :p

Yup, Guiness is fantastic - and works out about the same as most supplements when you price it up. I spoke to a show producer in Ireland who used to feed his horses Guiness and a 6 pack of raw eggs every day. I have also heard of racehorses being given raw eggs in the past.

And for humans – when my friend was in the Royal London Hospital after a major accident they gave him a pint of Guinness each night. Sherry for those who didn't have an appetite and Guinness to beef others up.

this is actually quite interesting .. maybe I should put Ethel on it then to help her get a bit fatter :p But how much would I have to give her?

my horses get a can of it each at xmas...I would give it to them if they needed weight gain everyday too - but I have a fat cob at mo so no need for it...and yes raw eggs are great for skin and coat! same for dogs..x

My horse likes guinness... and cider, anything my boyfriend gives him behind my back...

They used to feed it to the shires pulling the drays and I think they still do at some brewery in the west country...

:) Interesting, I was going to ask if it worked for humans too. :( Rats, it won't do it for me though, can't get Guinness, hate beer, zero alcohol tolerance and I couldn't possibly drink that much anyway.

LOL...................LOL................................... very good TallyHo!!

We always feed it to ours over the winter if they are lacking a little something, if they don't need it they always get it on Xmas day!!

NHS drinks trolley :p A fine thing.

Lush do a shampoo with Guiness in it, called Cynthia Sylvia Stout. Made my hair ever so shiny but the other perfumes were too much so I had to give it up.

We did exactly the same before big shows with the welsh lads! Guiness was put into the morning and night feeds. About 1/3 to 1/2 a can per horse.
Their coats were amazing.
Wouldn't let them drive mind......;)

I need to put on about that, but will have to find an alternative. Our Liquor Store hasn't even heard of Guinness:eek: it took me long enough to educate them about the necessity of stocking Pimms!

Whaaatt!!!!!!!!! No guinness? Do you like wine? Wine is also excellent for weight gain. I'm now addicted to that this year and have gained a rather soft squishty middle. I can now see it past my boobs.

Need to get addicted to orange juice next year... maybe with a touch of vodka.

I've heard of this before but never tried it! Was never sure what to make of it and i had never actually read into it. I was told, by my OH, that Guinness has been given to racehorses!

Could make for interesting times, "Some for you, some for me! Some for you..." :p

Whats the point of feeding Guinness to a horse when you can drink it yourself!

Daily Mail says this - so it must be true! :D

"MYTH: Guinness is a good source of iron and recommended in pregnancy One of the oldest misconceptions around (pardon the pun). I've lost count of the times a pregnant woman has told me her GP recommended Guinness for its iron content. Let's set the record straight.
You'd need to drink three pints of Guinness to provide the same amount of iron as a single egg yolk (1.1mg), and alcohol is not good for babies. A pint of Guinness contains 0.3mg of iron, less than three per cent of daily adult needs. Put another way, you'd need to drink 15 pints of Guinness to get the same amount of iron as two Weetabix."

It would also be an expensive supplement at £4.98 for 4 cans in Tesco!

Why not use something like Equijewel specifically designed for horses? Or a specifically designed iron supplement if your horse is indeed deficient in iron?

Well no, I think for a horse ( I assume bigger than a welshie) I would go a can a day for weight gain, and not shiny-for-show.

She's a TB, so bigger than a welshie :) I only really want her to gain weight, not fussed about show-shiney coat as she is on a break till she's ready to be brought back into work :) Right, so one can of guinness a day, yes? She has 3 feeds a day (little and often) do I split it into the three feeds or just in one? This is incase I decide to give it to her :p
