Gullet sizes...

I have a high withered tbx and trying a few friends saddles whilst I wait for saddle fitter to get in touch with me.

I tried one narrow fitting one and was surprise at how much space down the gullet there was, it's tricky enough to find one that doesn't sit low on his withers, which this one doesn't, but I reckon I could get quite literally put my whole hand down the gullet with some room.

Which brings me to my question, most of what I have read on interest you must get 3-4 fingers down gullet before sitting on it, but how many is too many?

firstly I'll say that I am definitely not a saddle expert, I always get a saddler out to check any saddle that I try.

But, my first thought from reading your post was that if you have a high withered horse and have that much clearance, is it due to the saddle being too narrow and therefore sitting up?

My boy has reasonably prominent withers (ISH but has more than his fair share of TB blood!) and the only way that I can get a decent fit is to use a saddle with front gussets, anything without them sits too low and if I didn't have the gussets then I'd probably have to use a medium narrow to get clearance when in reality he is actually medium wide.

I found that using a saddle with an adjustable gullet was the way forward! I've had it adjusted (for free!) three times as my horse kept losing weight.
