What colour should a dogs gums be?
After keeping me up all night with a rumbling tummy and keep darting off to the garden but hasn't actually been to the toilet my dog is just not right again today. I didn't manage to get him out of the house this morning and i have just got in from work and although his nose is nice and wet his gums are a kind of grey colour and his eyes and coat look dull.
Does this warrant a visit to the vet or should I just continue observing him? He hasn't eaten since yesterday morning and has not drunk much either.
 
A nice pink colour, however some breeds can differ(as they have rather weird gum colour

...but in general in a dog that is unwell grey is not a good colour

u can press on the gum with your finger just above the canine tooth(this is to test how quick blood is filling up empty capillaries).....when you release the gum should change back to its origional colour within a 1/2 seconds....certainly no more than 2....., if not this could be an indicator that he/she...is unwell.

I your dog is depressed, off food, off colour.i.e gums, drinking excessively or not at all, not passing motions or passing too much/loose motions....and this behaviour lasts more than a day....I would get him checked by your vet....just to be on the safe side.
Even phone and ask to speak to vet/nurse.
 
After I wrote this I took him for a little walk and he seemed fine. He had a good drink from a muddy puddle (why is this more appealing than lovely fresh tap water

) I have just fed him a light meal and he ate it all up and seems a little better. With regards to his gums although pinky now they do have a blacl twinge which I think is more pigmentation than anything else but they definalty look pinker now.
Should I try him on a diet for sensitive dogs as he seems to go through this every 2/3 weeks?
Is it likely that the gastroenteritus he had last year has left him really sesnitive?
