Anyone got suggestions? My dentist will make me specialised ones but they will cost me £210, and while I'm attached to my teeth I could use that on private healthcare which I would need if my face gets smashed in anyway!

Are the ones you buy from sports stores ever any good if someone hits you with a swing while galloping past?

When I played hockey we used ones you softened in hot water then bit into and they moulded to your teeth. I guess they were from sports shops. I never got hit in the face so can't say how effective they were!

I play hockey and also have the one bought from a sports shop that you put in hot water and bit into, I actually have two as I lost my first one, then found it again. There is various ones and I have the ones with gel inside as its softer. Tbh I don't know how much protection they would give in your case, but am sure that they would help! I know that they are secure but I would also be a little concerned that if you fell of they could be a possible choking hazard, depending on how you fell? All though in recent of HnH it was saying that Jockeys may start wearing them as it helps reduce concussion as well! I would of thought a helmet with the shield would be the best protection, in our hockey match the other day, the other team did actually wear masks when they where doing short corners!

I do have a helmet with shield but managed to see someone break a tooth even while wearing shield! The boil in hot water ones seems popular and cheap ish, though I've been reading how dentists don't recommend them... Though they have a vested interest in selling the expensive ones! Also still worried bat choking possibilities!

Given you have a shield as well I would go with the one you put in water. There won't be much choking risk as they are too big to go far and should provide enough extra protection

A custom made sports mouthguard is made to moulds (impressions) taken by a dentist.
A custom made sports mouthguard should cost no more than £100.00p inclusive
The advantage of a Custom Made Mouthguard is that they are made to fit you.
Boil and Bite mouthguards rarely fit that well, thin on moulding so their protective properties are not that good and may become loose and become trapped in your upper airway.
