My horse chomps on the bit a lot. He's had teeth done by an equine dentist and they're fine so no issues there (and saddle is done every 6 months).
He doesn't do it more or less when stressed or not. Not really a pattern, and no change of bit makes a difference (I have tried).

I refuse to shut his mouth with a flash strap, it doesn't really effect his riding, he can get a bit gobby but so do all young horses.

I'm going to try either gumbits or bit butter, in an attempt to try and get him out of the habit, which is what I think it is. Does anyone know what one is best for bit chompers? anyone have any comments for each?

Thank you :)

Slight hijack here.....my appy has a very soft skin and in the summer his loose ring snaffle and gag always rub him to the point that I just put his egg but snaffle in.....this year tho I need the extra breaks from the gag (and yes it is a training issue that we are going back to basics on but since he has turnt 19 he has regressed ten years at least :/) would the bit butter help his sore bits?

I believe it would help him yes, as it's especially for that SlightlyConfused
