Ok so this may not be the last time ever that I go all soppy about my Big Ears, but it'll be the last time it's related to hunting (this season anyway!).

I resisted posting a couple of weeks back after a disastrous day out with my local pack. Big Ears never put a foot wrong despite some extremely testing conditions on a boggy, rocky hill, but unfortunately I had a panic attack and couldn't get down a steep bank to cross over to the next part of the hill. I just went to pieces. Luckily the guy riding in front of me said he'd ride back with me to the boxes (I felt guilty after for ruining his day but eternally grateful that he did come with me).

This weekend was my last chance to go hunting, as I'm away every weekend for the rest of the season. I was dreading it all week, but felt better when my friend who is the master's daughter said I could ride with her and she'd keep an eye on me. I am so glad I went :) it was one of the best day's hunting I have ever been on. I found an extra gear in my Big Ears - we've had a few good gallops this season but nothing like what I experienced this time. I let her go completely and she stretched her neck out and went for it, it was such an amazing feeling! We also had a flat-out pace at one point, overtaking everyone who was trotting or cantering along. It's at moments like that that I remember she's a racehorse :D

She was just fantastic. We've only had eight days out since October but the difference in her is unbelievable. On her first day out she was panicking every time another horse got too close and kicking out (she was attacked by a stallion last summer which I think was the cause for the anxiety). On Saturday she was stood quietly next to two other pacers at the meet, throughout the day she let other horses jostle around her and she even struck up a strong friendship with my friend's coloured gelding Joey! They were inseparable, my friend and me were practically on top of each other as they parked themselves next to each other at every opportunity :) she's never batted an eyelid at the hounds or the horn, she's fine with the quad bikes roaring around. We've encountered steep hills and rivers and ditches, inanimate objects dotted around the countryside, pheasants flying out from their cover and she just stays completely calm. I'm a long way from where I was confidence-wise but I've started to realise that I don't need to worry about what my horse is doing underneath me so much, because she looks after both of us pretty well :)

She's having her shoes taken off this week and 6-8 weeks off to rest and put some weight on before we consider what to do next. Hopefully once the ground has dried up and the sheep below the house have lambed and been moved, I can cobble together a schooling area in the flat part of the field and work on her trot and canter whilst turning. I don't want it to be all boring for her so I'll be putting our new found love of water to the test and taking her swimming in the river too for a bit of fun :D (she stumbled on Saturday in the river and we nearly went for a dip together!)

If you've got this far I hope the overwhelming message that is coming across is that I blimmin' love my Big Ears and I'm so glad that she's mine :p

Aww sounds like you're doing fab :) Love the bit about her pacing, we used to use the pacers at the end of the season to gauge how fit the pointers were by whether they could keep up or not :p:D
Are you going to try and do any RoR classes with her?

Probably not...I'm sure she can turn her hoof to anything, the only thing holding her back is me! I think this summer is just going to be spent having fun and continuing to work on her trot and canter which we've pretty much only done in a straight line/uphill! I'm hopefully moving to Scotland next spring and OH is keen for me to have a go at jumping with her, he's already said he'll put some fences up on his jogging track for me so we shall see.

Every now and again I worry that she's going to be wasted spending her life with me because I'm not sure I'm ambitious or competitive enough. Then she gives me a look that says 'please just bog off, I'm relaxing' whenever I approach her with a saddle and bridle, and I remember that she's just a lazy cow who still resents me for making her race! And she's only five, so we've got the rest of her life to try and find something we're both good at together!

Just do what you're comfortable with :) of our ex-harness mob their new owners have got them doing; pleasure driving, dressage, showjumping and endurance so I'm sure you'll find your fit with her somewhere.

Aw, that was a moment shared. Don't you just love it when that bond feels as strong as steel? :)

Well I'm taking her harness up with me so that I can still get my driving fix :) I suggested to OH that we could use her as a pacemaker/teacher for his youngsters at home and he didn't laugh, so perhaps she'll be helping to train the next generation of racehorses! I quite like the idea of endurance, if I was fit enough/knew what I was doing I'd enter her in Man v Horse which is just up the road from me, I was once told that the perfect horse for the course would be a pacer. But I think I'd be biting off more than I can chew!

YES! She's one in a million. Mother pointed out she's not as affectionate as my first mare Smokey, but it's something I'm willing to overlook seeing as she doesn't try to inadvertently kill me on a regular basis (like Smokey!) I've got another horse that likes giving me kisses and cuddles so I can get my fix elsewhere if need be!

I think the affection might be a standy thing - ours have all been a bit stand offish but love a good scritch and enjoy any attention - just not so much that they'd ask for it the funny devils.
Endurance is something I know almost nil about but I think there are a couple of people on here that use standies and I know they're pretty popular for it :)

Well that sounds like Big Ears. She will tolerate fuss but only because she knows who feeds her. My first pacer Smokey used to love being fussed over, and our 2yo filly Daisy kisses me before I go into her stable in the morning :) she'll come to me in the field just for a cuddle, whereas the other two only come over because they think I may have food. If no food is forthcoming, they wander off quite quickly in case I want to go for a ride/the vet or farrier is coming!

I've met a lady through my ex-racehorses plight with STAGBI who is really big into her endurance. Her husband has a french trotter and she has a pacer that my boss Colin bred. It's seeing her photos and hearing how much fun she has that makes me think that might be for the big-earred one and me. No need to worry about 20m circles then! I'm also really keen to keep her pacing, I want to celebrate having five gaits :D
