hi there, I have a 26yr old welsh cob who had a bout of colic last night. while I've owned her she's never had colic and as far as I am aware she hasn't been prone to colic ( although not to sure of her previous history ). she panicked me last night with this bout and I have been reading up on gut balancers. is this something that could help her for future? just looking for a bit of advice really on gut balancers. also she had blood tests done and they have come back and vet said she's anaemic, said nothing worrying could just be her age but looking for some advice on supplements for this too. she's currently fed 3 times a day on fast fibre, micronized linseed, veteran mix, and a small handful of halleys chaff, and is also fed hay throughout the day/night. she's such a special horse to me and her bout last night gave me a bit of a fright, is there anything I can do post colic to help her out and to prevent it again? any advice is greatly appreciated

I lost 2 to colic myself and a livery horse, all different types though

would say Protexin without thinking about it best gut balancer In my books.

When you say anaemic, what do you mean, her blood count is low or her albumin. As different causes need different treatment. Personally I would not let the vet saying she is anaemic go by me without finding out why as it could mean there is another issue going on. I would ask your vet to elaborate on this, as at her age you need to find out why before it is more serious.

On feeding wise, is she a good doer this is good though http://keyflowfeeds.com/horse-feeds/pink-mash/ but your diet is not too bad, the only thing I would remove is the veteran mix as I don't like mix, I prefer simple feed.

Preventing colic in horses is like trying to stop it raining. There are so many many causes, and often the cause is never known.

I wouldn't give any product just for the sake of it, and although there are many things out there that advertise they could help the gut it doesn't mean that they will prevent colic in your horse. If you do decide to go with something though, make sure it is a product that has proven research behind it (not just a famous client saying it is great). Re the anaemia, ask your vet about supplements as it depends on the type of anaemia etc. (e.g. no point supplementing with iron if it isn't iron-deficiency anaemia).
Do all the usuals, like making sure she is drinking the right amount, that her teeth are up to date, and that she doesn't get any sudden changes of feeds and then try not to worry too much. I had a horse that had one bout of colic and never had another one, so cross fingers yours never has another one too.

vet is phoning us tonight to see how she's doing so will talk to him about the anaemia and find out more about it. he never elaborated on it this morning when he said about it. she's ok but she can drop weight quite quick but since she was put on the fast fibre she's holding her weight fine. thanks for your advice

Good idea.
Forgot to mention - presume you have a good de-worming programme in place. If not sure, then maybe discuss with vet too.
I think horses are designed to make us worry sometimes! (or all the time-lol).
