The horse i went to see at the weekend and loved was vetted last night.
And failed.

I'm absolutely gutted as he was everything i was looking for temperament wise and just looked so in need of some love, TLC and a good home.
The vet was brilliant and upset himself - he knew I took Sid on when he failed but he didn't fail as badly as this one did. He's only 9 and you have to wonder what's going to happen to the poor thing. Despite no obvious signs on walk up etc the he was hoping lame after the flexion tests and the vet stopped it there and then.
Gutted as thought I'd found a lovely horse with the most loving temperament but more for him wondering what will happen to him now.
Pointless post really but whilst my head knows to walk away was right I feel awful and want to dash over to rescue him before he's sold to some dodgy dealer or something!

Thats bad news! Bum! But don;t panic for him - this happend to a horse I almost bought last year and he ended up going to a lovely woman who just wanted to plod about. Because his weakness was found out before he was sold, he ended up going to the best home possible! I'm sure this horse will be looked after too.

this has happened to me twice in the last few weeks.

i think you just have to say to yourself "i paid for someone's expert opinion, so i HAVE to take it", otherwise you are just letting yourself in for a world of trouble. unless the owner is prepared to let you have the horse for more-or-less nothing (because it might cost you a fortune in vets' bills), and you can afford to have a spare around if it goes irremediably lame next week, walk away. you will find another horse, just as nice, but up to the job. very sad though.

Kerilli - you're right and I can't take the risk. The vet knew what i wanted him for and despite agreeing that he was lovely natured he couldn't recommend him even for the minimal amount of work i wanted him for. Sid was different - the vets view was for what we wanted him for he'd be fine although he has got some issues. This one was in a mess.
Its just very hard when you instantly felt a connection to an animal to the extent you trusted it to take you down a 60 mph road when you're papping yourself but you can't then return the "favour".
God I'm getting softer in my old age!
